TSW1405EVM: Interfacing with AFE5808AEVM

Part Number: TSW1405EVM

We are trying to interface AFE5808AEVM with TSW1405EVM.

Older thread: https://e2e.ti.com/support/other_analog/imaging_afes/f/239/t/407866

  • As per both related devices section of TSW1405EVM, only ADS12* series products are mentioned as compatible. Are these two compatible?
  • We followed the user guide of AFE5808AEVM on interfacing with TSW1400EVM
  • We connected +-5V (current limited at 1A) to AFE5808AEVM connected with TSW1405EVM, both connected to a Windows 7 PC via USB cable.
  • Both boards are getting recognised in corresponding GUIs.
  • We choose onboard 40MHz clock and gave 2MHz 600mV pk-pk sine wave as input to channel 2 on AFE
  • On the AFE GUI, we set Single to take on board CLK and then choose test pattern as ramp
  • As mentioned in Section 7 (page 8), High Speed Data Converter Pro GUI version is v2.7, from which they could select AFE5808A board. But the current available version of HSDC Pro is v4.5 which does not have option to select AFE5808A.
  • As per the older thread mentioned above, there was a suggestion to use ADS528x and set LSB first in ADC settings and also reversing the order of the channels (1-->8 , 2-->7 etc) by a user.
  • We didn't quite understand the reversing channel part. Is this a verified workaround?
  • Is it possible for TI to provide an updated user guide or ini file for AFE5808A to be used with HSDC Pro v4.5 and TSW1405EVM?
  • In the screenshot of HSDC Pro GUI (page 11) provided with AFE5808AEVM user guide, on the bottom status bar, Interface Type = ADC_FIRMWARE is given. It is not shown in our installation.

Please let me know if any further details are required.

  • Hello Aparna,

Currently there is no ini file for the AFE5808A device and it has to be generated and tested.
As mentioned in the other post, a user was able to make it work using the ADS528x ini file by making a couple of changes.
I will be able to provide the ini file with the changes and tested by March 1st.
  • Hello Praveen,

Thanks a lot for your support. Shall wait for the ini file.
  • Hello Aparna,

Here is the link to the ini file for AFE5808A for TSW1405 EVM.

    /cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/73/7824.AFE5808.ini

On the AFE5808A GUI, for the ADC configuration, set Bit Order to LSB First and LVDS data rate to 12X.

  • Hello Praveen,

Thanks a lot for providing the ini file. It would be really helpful if you can confirm if our test setup is correct or not:

    • We connected +-5V (current limited at 1A) to AFE5808AEVM connected with TSW1405EVM, both connected to a Windows 7 PC via USB cable.
    • Both boards are getting recognised in corresponding GUIs.
    • We choose onboard 40MHz clock and gave 2MHz 600mV pk-pk sine wave as input to channel 2 on AFE
    • On the AFE GUI, we set Single to take on board CLK and then choose test pattern as ramp
    • As you mentioned, set LSB first and LVDS data rate as 12x

Will checkout the ini file and let you know how it goes.

  • Hello Praveen,

We have used the ini file you sent, but still out of luck. I am explaining what we did step by step (as per the the the user guide of AFE5808AEVM). Please go through it an let us know if we did something wrong or if we missed anything.

    1. Jumper settings on AFE5808AEVM (screenshot) - specifically JP9 set to OSC side to use onboard CMOS clock, JP15 set to on-board VCNTL side
    2. Connected +5V and -5V (limited at 1A) power
    3. Connected TSW1405EVM to the board and connect both boards to PC via USB (picture) and turned +5 -5 power on
    4. As mentioned in the guide, 4 green LEDs and 2 red (actually LED41,42 and another LED which shows 1.8V) are glowing. (current drawn at this time is 0.34A on +5V and 0.03A on -5V)
    5. Launch AFE5808AEVM GUI, LED41,42 turns off, as expected
    6. Set LSB First, 12X LVDS data rate, ADCCLK to Single ended (to use on-board clock) and set test pattern to Ramp (screenshot) (current drawn now is 0.45A on +5V, 0.03A on -5V)
    7. Launch HSDCPro GUI, TSW1405 is recognized and firmware is loaded by selecting AFE5808 from the dropdown (a blue LED is glowing on TSW1405EVM now)
    8. Set ADC Output Data Rate as 40M
    9. Set ADC Input Target Frequency as 2M
    10. Check the Auto Calculation of coherent frequencies
    11. Set Analysis window to 65536
    12. Select Time Domain
    13. Pressed Capture button, should be observing a ramping waveform, but just a blue line at 0 is shown - (screenshot)
    14. Analysis window automatically changes to 8192 instead of 65536, cannot change it back to 65536
    15. Current drawn remains at 0.46A on +5V, 0.03A on -5V

    Any clues/suggestions?

  • Hello Praveen,

    Waiting for your response.

    Thank you
  • Hello Aparna,

    I apologize for the delay.

Looking at your jumper settings on #1, it seems like the shunt jumper on JP1 pins 1-2 is not present.
Can you place the shunt jumper on JP1 pins 1-2 and try again?

The rest of the sequence seems to be fine.
  • Hi Praveen,

Will shunt 1,2 or JP1 and let you know how it went.

    Thanks
  • Hello Praveen,

It worked! We shorted 1,2 of JP1 and we can see the ramp output on HSDC Pro GUI. Thanks a lot for your support.
