ADS1118EVM: ADS1118EVM Temperature Reading Procedure (Software)

Part Number: ADS1118EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1118

Hi Precision Data Converters Team,

One of our customers is currently measuring temperature error using our ADS1118EVM and we have a couple of questions regarding transmission of temperature data between the ADS1118 and EVM software:

1. How the software converts data from the ADC to temperature? The application note Precision Thermocouple Measurements with the ADS1118 (SBAA189) suggests various methods.

2. Is there any signal conditioning occurring within the device prior to transmitting the signal?

Thanks,

  • Leo,

Are asking about the internal temperature sensor (setting the TS_MODE=1 in the Config Register)? This reading is just a direct reading through the ADC conversion. You can find table and conversion in the datasheet on page 20.

When using the EVM with a thermocouple, the EVM takes temperature data with cold junction compensation. This is what you see in Figure 12 of the sbaa189 (Precision Thermocouple Measurement with the ADS1118).

There is no other signal conditioning used to take the data with the EVM software. I don't believe there's a look-up table or averaging done to smooth out data or linearize the result.
