DAC8802: Supply current v/s Output current

Hi,

The maximum value of DAC8802 supply current is 5 microampere but the full-scale analog output current for 3FFFh is 2.5 milliampere.

Q1. Is it possible to operate DAC8802 from a voltage rail of 5V having 5microampere capacity?

Q2. If yes, then from where DAC8802 will get 2.5 milliamperes full-scale output current? Do it has to be provided by reference voltage at VREFX?

Hi Deepak,

Please find the answers below:

1. The 5uA rating is for the quiescent current IDD. This means the current taken by the device alone when the outputs are not drawing any current. Hence, you cannot run the device from a 5V, 5uA power supply
2. The output currents are also drawn from the power supply and hence, the total current rating for the power supply should be greater than the quiescent current plus the current drawn by all DAC channels. The reference doesn't supply the output current.

I have one more doubt, do the above concept is applicable to all DAC or is it only for DAC88xx series?

Hi Deepak,

This is a generic concept. All devices will draw current for their operation and that is termed as IDD typically. Load currents will be in addition to that.
