ADS5482EVM: EVM selection

Part Number: ADS5482EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSEVM572X, , ADS4122EVM, ADS4122, ADS4125

Hi TI'ers,

My requirement is i want one ADC evm
1.which can interface with the gp evm AM572x(TMDSEVM572x).
2.Sampling rate should be grater than 100MSPS.
3.High speed interface.
4. Input Analog voltage is 0 to -3V
5.Frequency greater than 100MHz

Does ADS548x can meet my requirement?

Regards

  • Hi Jenny,

We are looking into your question. We reply with an answer as soon as we can.

  • Hi,

Looking down the list of connectivity options on that TMDSEVM I do not see anything that directly connects to one of our high speed ADC EVMs.    Most of what I see for that TMDSEVM platform are interfaces such as Ethernet or USB or the like.   The ADS5482EVM like nearly all our high speed ADC EVMs with LVDS signaling have a connector that connects to one of our FPGA-based capture cards such as the TSW1400.   There are no DSP or other processor platforms that have such a matching interface that I know of.  There is just too much data coming out of a high speed ADC to go into the usual general purpose IO for a processor platform such as what you are looking at.   For example, there is a TIDesign http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tiduc79/tiduc79.pdf  that shows one of our ADC EVMs modified to connect to the Beaglebone development platform, but the data rate through the interface was much less than what the max sample rate of the ADC itself was capable of.   The most common application by far of interfacing with an ADC of 100Msps or more is to have an FPGA design first catch the data from an ADC to bridge the gap getting the data into some other processor - or having the FPGA itself do the processing.

  • Hi Richard,

    Thank you for patient answers.

As per (http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tiduc79/tiduc79.pdf) can i give the ads4122evm's parallel CMOS output at 20msps directly to the co-processor PRU of AM572x. Gp EVM

  • Hi,

You will have to ask that in the forum for that processor.  In this forum I can tell you that the ADC would have no trouble with an output such as that, but I would not be able to tell you what the AM572x is capable of.  You would have to ask in their forum.  I see there is a link to their forum near the end of the document, section 3.2.3.

  • Hi,

How do i configure ADS4122evm at 20 Msps or less?

    Thanks,

    Anjana Pathak

  • Hi,

per the datasheet for the ADS4122 on page 56 table 23, there is a bit in the SPI register space to enable low speed operation.   This bit should be set for operation below 80Msps.   But the datasheet also says that for the ADS4122 the bit is already set by default for the device since this device is only meant for lower speed operation.  So you would not need to do anything but apply a reset to the device after powerup.

    From the datasheet:

Table 23. Register Address DFh (Default = 00h)

    7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0

    0 0 LOW SPEED 0 0 0 0

    Bits[7:6] Always write 0

    Bits[5:4] LOW SPEED: Low-speed mode

For the ADS4122/42, the low-speed mode is enabled by default after reset.

    00, 01, 10, 11 = Do not use

    For the ADS4125/55 only:

00, 01, 10 = Low-speed mode disabled (default state after reset); this setting is recommended for

sampling rates greater than 80 MSPS.

11 = Low-speed mode enabled; this setting is recommended for sampling rates less than or equal

    to 80 MSPS.

    Bits[3:0] Always write 0

    Richard P.

  • Thanks a lot for very useful info..
Is there any software available for configuring this Adc evm ?
Any additional module is required to configure ADS4122evm?

    Anjana Pathak
  • Hi,

There is a SPI GUI installer available in the TI web site for the EVM.  This will allow the Windows PC that the GUI is installed on to control the configuration of the EVM through a USB port.  There is no additional hardware needed to configure the EVM.

  • Thanks a lot lot...........
    one more query.
What is the minimum sampling rate for ADS4122 and what rate the data is send out parallel?

    Anjana
  • Anjana,

The min is 20 Msps. For parallel data, the output will also be 20MHz.
