ADS1246: DNL

Part Number: ADS1246
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1146

Hello-

What is the DNL of the ADS1246? We noticed that the ADS1146 data sheet says no missing codes on the resolution specification line, but not true of the 24b version. Can you comment on this error measurement, please?

Thanks and Best Regards,

  • Tim,

The DNL for this and other delta-sigma type ADCs should be less than 1 LSB by the nature of the ADC. The ADS1246 should also be no missing codes, but this is noted in the ADS1146 and not in the ADS1246 for two reasons.

First, on the ADS1246, the noise in the measurement will be larger than an LSB (and any DNL) that could be not easily noticable without significant averaging. In the ADS1146, the noise is less than the LSB so it's more important to note no missing codes as a specification.

Second, since the ADS1146 is a 16-bit ADC, it is often compared to other SAR converters, for which no missing codes is a common selling point.

Regardless, both devices are basically the same in construction and operation and both have DNL that should be less than 1 LSB.
