ADS5463: Suggestion on FPGA board to work with ADS5463 and DAC3152

Hello,

I am planning to interface ADS5463 and DAC3152 using an FPGA board between the data converters. I need an FPGA board to perform some operations on the data from ADC and pass the new data to DAC. I am going to interface the boards using FMC connectors.

I am sure that I will have to use an FPGA board for this development and want some advice/suggestion on which board will be suitable for interfacing the 500 MSPS data converters.

I have looked into some options from Xilinx ZC702/ZC706 evaluation kit but will like to know if any other boards are more suitable for my application as I am a novice in the field of FPGA based design and interface.

Hi VK,

We are looking a little closer at your question. We have used the ZC706 with some of our giga sample adcs, so it should be able to handle the 500 MSPS data rate your application requires.

Page 30 of this document shows an example.

Hello Dan,

Thank you for the reply and document.

I am planning to use the Vivado through IP Intergrator based block diagram design approach as I am not familiar with RTL design approach.

I also looked through the documentation available on Xilinx website but could not find document which explains the design procedure along with constraint definition tutorial from the scratch for a completely new project (May be I am looking at the wrong place!).

This may be very basic question but I will really appreciate some help in getting started in right direction.

All of our existing Xilinx examples are based on JESD204B devices. For the ADS5463, the only thing we can offer is the app notes I have attached. We do have some RTL design examples from older Xilinx FPGA's if you are interested.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for sharing the app noted, this will be very helpful.

It would be great if you can share the RTL designs. I am hoping that the designs are compatible with vivado. Is there a GitHub or any other open source SCM where I can use to find the examples of similar ADC and DAC interfaces?

The examples in the app note show only one board (ADC) connected to the FPGA board with FMC connector. Can I interface 2 boards (ADC and DAC) at the same time to the ZC706? The reason I am asking this is that the image in App note has FMC connector from only one board cover the area in front of 2nd FMC connector. I am planning to buy the board and want to confirm before it is ordered.

Many of our boards did not fit the required form factor to allow side by side insertion of the two FMC connectors. You would probably require a riser or an adapter to allow you spread them out. What DAC board are you think of using? The old RTL code is attached. These where used with Xilinx ISE. You still should be able to import them into Vivado I would think. I do not know about any open source SCM.

These will not fit side by side with the FPGA board.

Jim,

Thank you for the information.

I came across an FMC spacer (as shown in fig below), as a possible solution to fit the ADC and DAC on FPGA board.

Can you suggest any components like this which may solve the issue?

If I decide to use the spacers is there a chance of degradation in performance?

Vinit,

TI actually sells FMC-HSMC adapters that will allow you to possibly do what you want. Look at the attached files. More info about these boards can be found on the TI website. The schematic for these boards are attached. You can compare them to the ADC, DAC, and FPGA platform schematics you plan on using to see if they will work for you.
