DAC80504: DAC output configuration

Part Number: DAC80504

Hi,

Unfortunately, I've already used the following configuration for the DAC80504:

DIV setting = :1

Gain setting = x1.

Per the datasheet table 1, this configuration is "not recommended". could you please explain why this configuration is not recommended?

Thanks,

Noam

  • Noam,

DIV = 1 and GAIN = 1 effectively is the same as DIV = 2 and GAIN = 2 in terms of the realized analog output voltage range. Since those two settings are redundant but would be implemented with separate internal circuits, only one is actually production tested to help reduce device cost. DIV = 2 and GAIN = 2 was chosen as the range at final test somewhat arbitrarily - if 0 to VREF is the desired output range then it is suggested to use DIV = 2 and GAIN = 2.

  • Thank Kevin for the quick reply.

I already implemented the DIV=GAIN=0 option so unfortunately I'm going to use it although not been tested by TI fab...

I was concerned that this option has worse analog performance.

    Thanks again,

    Noam
  • Hi,
Please note that the DIV=1 GAIN=1 is not valid!
I had long time in the lab until I've understand that this combination is NOT WORKING e.g. outputs are ZERO!

  • Noam,

I will check in to this with the Product Definer / Datasheet owner. Pending the results of that discussion, a datasheet update may come along.

Sorry for the confusion and loss of your time.
  • Hi Noam,

Would you mind sharing a schematic for the design? I want to check this against the reference alarm conditions w/ the configuration of the reference divider as this is one possibility of the internal reference shutting down and creating a similar symptom to what you have described.
