DAC5311-Q1: VOUT output passes through the wire harness to another controller. What protection circuit should be added to the VOUT pin?

Part Number: DAC5311-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIPD153, DAC5311

Dears,

VOUT output passes through the wire harness to another controller. What protection circuit should be added to the VOUT pin? Used in tractor cars, the environment is more complex, wire harness may be broken, disconnected, grounded, human touch and so on.

The customer applies it to the tractor. The digital signal is converted into analog signal, and the analog control signal is transmitted to another control board through the wiring harness of about 2~5 meters.

Thanks.

  • Hi Gary,

While I'm not familiar with exactly the tractor car application you're describing, we have seen somewhat similar requests in Factory Automation & Control PLC applications. In PLCs frequently products are designed to the IEC61000-4 standard, which includes provisions for things like ESD, switching transients, lightning strikes, and radiated emissions.

One approach to protection against that standard is discussed in TIPD153. Basically look at the VOUT portion for what to apply to the DAC5311 - just with the exception that obviously DAC5311 does not include a sense connection so it will be slightly different.

In the end this may be a slight overkill for your application's needs, but I do feel like this would be a very robust protection solution.
