ADS7956: ADS7957EVM mod for ADS7956?

Part Number: ADS7956
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7957EVM-PDK, ADS7957, ADS7953EVM-PDK, ADCPRO, ADS7953

I have ADS7957EVM-PDK (and MMB0) for evaluation.  Can the IC ADS7957 be removed, and the ADS7956 inserted and work in the eval board(s)?

Would ADS7953EVM-PDK work better?

  • Hello,
The hardware is the same for both of these EVMs.
The difference is the software available at each of there webpages.
The software for the ADS7957EVM_PDK will provide the necessary digital support for 10 bits and 16 channel while
the software for the ADS7953EVM-PDK will provide the necessary digital support for 12 bit and 16 channels
I would suggest using the ADS7957EVM-PDK software and hardaware

Note that the software will be looking for 16 channels instead of 12, keep that in mind when working through the GUI. But because they are both 10 bit devices, there should be no issue with the data out format.

    Regards
    Cynthia
  • Yes, the ADS7956 worked in the ADS7957EVM!

I purchased the ADS7953EVM-PDK, and just plugged it in and tried to run ADCPro.  But I received an error message "EVM/HW Incompatible."  ADCPro will not run.

    "old" ADS7957EVM-PDK:  MMB0 Rev D, ADS7957EVM Rev B

    "new" ADS7953EVM-PDK: MMB0 Rev E, ADS7953 Rev B.

I tried the "old" MMB0 Rev D (from the '57) and plugged in the '53EVM board.  Still receive an error message "EVM/HW Incompatible."

    1. What needs to be done for ADCPro to recognize the ADS7953EVM?

    2. Can ADS7956 be put onto ADS753EVM and work?

  • Rick,

Cynthia is out of the office right now, so I thought I'd jump in with some comments and things to try.

Just to make sure, were you able to run the ADS7957EVM-PDK before with ADCPro? I just wanted to make sure that things were properly downloaded before.

When you plug the board to your USB port (without running ADCPro), how does the board get enumerated? Does it show up as an unknown device? Can you post a picture of your device manager window? Also, what version of windows are you running?

  • The ADS7957EVM-PDK continues to work. I'm running WinXP. Procedure I'm using is to connect MMB0 to EVM, apply 6V to MMB0, run ADCPro (if not already running) connect USB to PC (Win XP). Then inside the ADCPro window, select EVM --> ADS7957EVM (the only EVM that pops up, although there are "File Reader", "Triple Generator" and "unload EVM" options).

I noticed there is a different file for the '53EVM "ADS7953EVM-PDK-SW-installer.exe". Can both show up simlutaneously within ADCPro as EVMs to load?

Ultimately I'm trying to get another ADS7956 onto another EVM.
  • Rick,

Unplug the EVM and if you haven't run the ADS7953EVM-PDK-SW-installer.exe, go ahead and do so. I would note that the USBStyx downloader is confusing, and that you want to avoid running that again or it will unload it.

Once you start up ADCPro again, there should be another selectable plug-in for the ADS7953EVM and you should be able to run that.

Let me know if that works. If there are still problems, I have one more thing to try.

  • Joseph,
Both EVMs show up in ADCPro now, thank you!

Now, will the ADS7956 work in the ADS7953EVM?
  • (and the ADS7953 works)
  • Rick,

I'm glad that the two plug-ins both work.

As for using an ADS7956 in an ADS7953EVM, I don't know if it will work. It seems to me that the ADS7953 is a super-set of the ADS7956, so there shouldn't be a problem, but I don't know how the software handles the mismatches in channel count and the readout of data length. It's possible that ADCPro is ok reading the data with the last two LSb that the ADS7953. However, I have never tried it.

  • Joseph,

The ADS7956 works on the ADS7953EVM.  The only change I had to do was, as you stated, load the ADS7953's executable as a plug-in to ADCPro.

(And the ADS7956 works on the ADS7957EVM with the ADS7957 executable loaded into the ADCPro.)

    Thanks for your help!
