ADS8864: ADS8864 of ESD protection

Part Number: ADS8864
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS8881

Does analog input pin include ESD protection function?

If you have a feature, how much capacity?

best Regards,BANE

  • Hello,

Yes, there is ESD protection on the analog input pins. These are shown in Figure 44 of the datasheet. The protection is intended for normal handling during assembly of parts onto a board. The internal protection is not intended to protect against direct board level ESD without additional external parts.

If interested, take a look at the Precision Labs material on how we test for ESD.

I will need to check if we have any specific ESD ratings for this device, such has HBM or CDM model ratings.

  • Hello,

The ADS8864 datasheet is going through an update and will include ESD ratings. This is targeted to be available for download on TI.com by mid-March.

The ratings will be identical to the ADS8881 device.

    Human-body model (HBM) +/-2000V
    Charged-device model (CDM) +/-500V

  • Hi,

What is the allowable current through the diode between ADC input and VREF or GND?

My customer want to know it to determine the resistance value in external input RC filter.  The resistance works to limit the current through the diode, when input voltage goes high.

  • Hello Taki-san,

We are looking at possibly adding this spec to the datasheet, but at this time, I do not have an estimate when this will be complete.

In general, most amplifiers and data converters that have the input current specified are typically limited to +/-10mA. If I get a definite number, I will provide this to you, but at this time, a typical value is the best estimate I can provide.

    Regards,
    Keith
