ADC3441: "input pin (...) must swing symmetrically", ADC344x family

in the datasheet for ADC344x pg. 46, 9.3.1 Analog Inputs section it says that 

Each input pin (INP, INM) must swing symmetrically between (VCM + 0.5 V) and (VCM – 0.5 V), resulting in a 2-VPP (default) differential input swing.

(emphasis mine)

I understand this as "the integral of the signal (minus the VCM baseline) over a long time must be more or less equal to 0". Since that would rule out DC signals (which are explicitly said to be supported as per this answer) I am assuming that my understanding of that is wrong. Can you explain to me what this means? 

I'm trying to digitize integrated charge from a SiPM, so the signal form is of course dependent on the light level.

    I am sorry but I do not understand your question. Maybe if you can describe SiPM in more detail as I am unfamiliar with this. Do you have a schematic you can share? What is exactly driving the ADC input pins?
