ADC32RF44EVM: How to set clock properly with JESD frequency using TSW14J56 EVM host board?

Part Number: ADC32RF44EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC32RF44

Hi-

We are using a ADC32RF44 EVM board on the TSW14J56 EVM host board.

We are using the supplied TI software for each board.

Are there instructions on how to set the frequency of the ADC on the ADC32RF44 board, and then have that frequency carry over to the TSW14J56?  We enter a frequency into the "ADC Output Data Rate" Gui box, but believe the JESD rate is not updated as we would expect.

We have tried using internal clocking as well as external clocking.

For example, we use external clocking of 2.4GHz and set the GUI for the ADC32RF44 to be external clocked, and set the 2.4GHz value into the ADC Output Data Rate GUI on the TSW14J56.  Our RF input frequency to the ADC is 300 MHz.  With this set up, the detected frequency is 293.555MHz instead of 300 MHz.  So something is off, likely by the same ratio as our clock shift from the 2457.6MHz (default) to the new 2.4GHz.

What is the procedure for setting a new clock frequency?  Do we need to supply the JESD clock rate in the GUI?  Or do we need to supply analog connection onboard somewhere?

Thanks.

Bill

  • Hi Bill
I have notified the ADC32RF44 expert regarding your questions. He will provide a more detailed response soon.

  • Hi Bill,

Were you able to get the right frequency in output FFT (in High speed data converter pro) with internal clock?

In your example when you are using an external clock, did you change the jumper JP3 to EXT CLK?

To set a new clock frequency, we have to connect the ADC sampling clock to ADC_CLK_IN (J5) connector. Other clocks required (including JESD clocks for TSW14J56) are generated on-board. In high speed data converter pro GUI, we have to update the sampling rate in field highlighted in the picture below.

  • Thanks.
Yes, we followed the instructions and made the J3 change. We also made (to use the internal clock) the cap changes. Perhaps make the caps a little larger???

We eventually got it working but there seem to be a couple of state-space issues in the app. We have a couple of cases whereby click-order is important. We are still using a scope to check for coherence between clocks because if we click settings in the wrong order, the devices go into a unknown state and we need to start the process over.

Is there a command-line version of the app so we can script it better, and can we run two complete setups (ADC and the host board) from one computer?

    Thanks

    Bill
  • Hi Bill,

We don't have a command line version ADC32RFxx EVM GUI.
As two ADC boards have the same USB designator, we can't run them connected to one computer.
