ADS1232REF: Is there an alternate to the evaluation board?

Part Number: ADS1232REF
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1232, ADS1234, ADS1261, ADS124S08

Hi

I am based in the UK and looking to gain immediate delivery of a ADS1232REF evaluation board, but am unable to find UK suppliers with stock.

I need an ADC that can process data from a 6 wire load cell, the type with the sense wires. Ideally it would be able to handle 4 such load cells but that is a "nice to have". Is there an alternate to the ADS1232REF?

Thank you

  • Hi Ross,

Welcome to the E2E forum!  I want to make sure I fully understand your needs.  You said "I need an ADC that can process data from a 6 wire load cell".  The ADS1232 is an analog-to-digital converter, and although there is some filtering within the device, the digital output is a representation of the analog input.  Any processing, such as conversion to weight, would be done by an external microprocessor.  The ADS1232REF is an example of how a whole system would work.

Are you looking for a turnkey solution?  Or are you looking for an ADC that would be capable of measuring 4 load cells?  The ADS1234 is very similar to the ADS1232, but with four input channels compared to just 2 for the ADS1232.  These devices use a single ADC with a mux input.  The cycle time reading each channel can be quite long as the ADC has a sinc4 filter which means that it will take four complete conversions of the input voltage before the digital filter completely settles.  So to cycle through all 4 channels on the ADS1234 it would take 1.6 seconds (401ms * 4) for the 10sps data rate, and 204ms (51ms * 4) for the 80sps data rate.

Another possible device would be the ADS1261.  This device is also a low noise ADC with a mux input, but is capable of much faster data rates.  A third possible device would be the ADS124S08.

There is no turnkey solution.  Even the ADS1232REF is a demonstration evaluation module.  The output in scale mode is only available for a single input channel, and there is no communication with the PC possible while in scale mode.  Only the onboard LCD will show the results.

    Best regards,
