ADS8166: Burst mode

Part Number: ADS8166

Dear support teams

I couldn't understand burst mode.
Could you let me know the overall function of burst mode?

Best Regards,
Hirokazu Takahashi

  • Hello Hirokazu-san,

'Burst Mode' is not a special mode that is configured inside the device using registers or pins.  It is a phrase used to describe a use case when the ADC is not taking conversions for a long period of time, and then starts taking several conversions over a much shorter period of time.

When the device starts converting, this looks like a load step on the reference input.  If the reference or reference buffer is not designed properly, it can cause the reference voltage to temporarily drop before recovering many samples later.  This is discussed in detail in section 6.5 of TI Precision Labs – ADCs: Developing the SAR Reference Input Model

The reference buffer inside the ADS8166 is designed to recover in less than 1 sample period, which allows the first conversion after a long period of inactivity to be accurate.

    Thanks!
