AMC7823: DAC Maximum output current value

Part Number: AMC7823

For AMC7823, the DAC's output current is spec'ed at +/- 1mA typical.

Is there any spec on the maximum output current of the DAC? Or chart to show the characteristics & limits?

  • Eddie,

There's not a lot of description on the maximum output current, but I'd refer to the sourcing and sinking current graphs in the datasheet. These typical characteristics show how much current the output can source and sink as the output buffer is driven to the rails. These are Figures 29 and 30 shown below:

For example, we can look at Figure 29. As you source current with AVDD=5V, the output can be driven to near 5V with as much as a 6mA load. However, as you go higher in load current the compliance to the positive rail diminishes. However, as you sink current, you start to lose compliance to ground quickly.

  • Hi Joseph,

How about overload or short circuit current?

In event of fault, will the output limit to 20mA or AMC7823 get damaged?

  • Eddie,

From the datasheet, the Absolute Maximum Ratings show that the maximum current would be ±20mA. If the output of the device sources 20mA, the device risks damage.

I can check to see if there's any characterization data to see if anyone on the team has measured the short circuit current limit. Looking at the curves, I would guess that low voltage AVDD operation the current would be self limiting. However, at higher voltage (5V), the current output would be close.
