DAC8830: Is it possible to use R-R output

Part Number: DAC8830

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering DAC8830 and has a question.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

We’d like to use the DAC8830 with an output R-R.

According to the description in the data sheet
(1)The output voltage range is 0 to VREF.
(2)VREF can be entered up to VDD.

Therefore, when VREF = VDD, the output voltage range is 0 to VDD,

We think it can be used output R-R.

Is it correct ?

Could you please let me know if there are any points to note in this usage.

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi-san,

If VDD=VREF then the output would be 0V to VDD.  You can use the output as an unbuffered R-2R output if you desire.  Note that if you are going to buffer the output, you must ensure that the output amplifier has enough voltage supply headroom to operate at VDD, and it might require a supply >VDD.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand DAC8830 could use 0V to VDD when VREF=VDD.

I'll share this information with the customer.

Also, could you please advise one more point.

At this time, are the electrical charasteristics of INL, DNL, etc. the sama as the datasheet ?

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi-san,

The electrical characteristics would be the same, though note that the R-2R is fairly high impedance, loads directly on the output can effect the performance, which is why there is usually an output buffer connected to the DAC.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand the electrical characteristics is same.

The output is high impedance and output buffer is needed.

I'll share your suggestion with the customer.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
