ADS1115: Can I use ADS1115 as thermocouple measurement?

Part Number: ADS1115
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1118, , ADS112C04

Hello TI experts,

my customer consider thermocouple IC, an I found the item below in TI.com;

https://www.ti.com/tool/TIPD109#3

as you see, this design used ADS1118. however my customer wants I2C interface.

so I found ADS1115, which has I2C interface and almost same with ADS1118.

but I am little worried about this, ADS1118 has special feature as temperature sensor, but ADS1115 has feature as comparator.

so, i want to know that is it possible to use ADS1115 as thermocouple measurements, using that reference design.

please check this issue. Thanks.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi Chase,

    You cannot directly use the same design for the ADS1115 as for the ADS1118.  As you mentioned, the ADS1118 has the internal temperature sensor.  However it would be possible to measure the TC using the ADS1115.  You would also need to measure the cold-junction temperature which can also be done with the ADS1115, but would require an additional sensor for measuring the cold-junction temperature.  I would recommend that the customer review A Basic Guide to Thermocouple Measurements.  There is a lot of information in this document to help design a TC measurement circuit.

    I would suggest looking at the ADS112C04 instead as this device has additional features such as burnout current sources for sensor break detection.  This device also includes a highly accurate internal temperature sensor similar to the ADS1118.
