ADS8744 Dout behavior during first 8 clocks of a transaction

While using the ADS7844 we've observed that the DOUT pin outputs a byte during the first 8 clock cycles of each transaction (up to the point that busy pin goes high), that byte seems to be correlated with the previous converted value.

The datasheet shows that this pin is supposed to drive low during those 8 clock cycles. Is that behavior intended?

The device is in 24bits/conversion mode and 12bits/sample resolution.
