DAC5681EVM with TSW1400EVM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC5681EVM, CDCM7005, DAC5681

Hi,

I am planning to purchase and use DAC5681EVM with TSW1400EVM. But, as per the board connectors in both the boards, I am finding the following differences.

  • TSW1400EVM has 180-position Board Connector where as DAC5681EVM  has 160-position board connector.

With this difference, I am not able to understand how I can connect these two evaluation boards together.

I have gone through following links which say that DAC5681EVM and TSW1400EVM are compatible.

https://e2e.ti.com/support/data_converters/high_speed_data_converters/f/68/t/348649#pi239031349filter=all&pi239031349scroll=false

Please suggest.

  • Hariprasad,

Both boards use a three bank HSMC connector. On the DAC board, the 1st bank is missing the GND pins between the differential signals. These are present on the TSW1400EVM. This is a total of 20 pins. Even though they are missing from the schematic symbol, the DAC connector has the same number of pins as the TSW1400EVM connector and they mate together.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you for your quick response. That was very helpful.

I have one more query regarding DAC5681EVM. In DAC5681EVM, U6 (VCXO) is not mounted. The user guide (SLAU236A.pdf) lists the part number as TCO-2111-491.52. But, this is not available. Can you suggest alternate part with same frequency, IO standard and footprint?
[ I am not able to find any .brd file to check the original footprint of U6]

  • Hi Hariprasad,

Here is the link to the datsheet for TCO-2111-491.52.
    media.digikey.com/.../TCO-2000_2100_Series.pdf
I can't think of any alternative part that has similar specs.

  • Hi Neeraj,

Thank you for the link. I will explore more.

I have a question regarding TSW1400EVM pattern generation. I want to test the set up with following patterns.

    • Continuous square / Sine wave
    • Continuous trail of exponential pulses
    • Continuous waveform for limited period [ Like the EVM generates sine wave for first 5 minutes and after that it should stop outputting any waveform]

How I can generate above mentioned patterns?

  • Hi,
Also, I want to know whether any software/tool is needed for DAC5681EVM?

[For DAC5682zEVM there is a separate tool to load the configuration files. but what about DAC5681EVM? how to configure DAC and clock synchronizer (CDCM7005)?

    Regards,
    Hariprasad
  • Hi,

I am summarizing all my questions.

    • Customer wants to use on-board clock for VCXO. So I want to procure TCO-2111-491.52. But, all the vendors showing out-of stock status for this oscillator. Even this part is not listed out in Epson catalogue.  Please suggest me alternate part so that I can mount this part.
    • Whether DAC5681EVM evaluation kit comes with required power adapters and cables?

  • Hi Hariprasad,

DAC5681/81z/82z shares the same EVM software. Here is the link to download the software.

    www.ti.com/.../DAC5682zEVM

DAC5681EVM ships with USB cable required to interface with the PC. The EVM is powered through banana cables, which are not included in the box.

  • Hi,

Is it possible to attend my questions regarding TSW1400EVM.
It is urgent since I have to purchase depending on the support of such patterns from TSW1400EVM. Otherwise this EVM is not useful for me.

  • Hi Hariprasad,

Let me address your pattern questions.

    1. Continuous square / Sine wave
    2. Continuous trail of exponential pulses
    3. Continuous waveform for limited period [ Like the EVM generates sine wave for first 5 minutes and after that it should stop outputting any waveform]

The TSW1400 is an FPGA based buffer play back solution for DAC evaluation, and a buffer capture system for ADC analysis - it is not test equipment and is not intended to be used for in-system applications, however you may find some means with the available hooks to meet your needs.

1 - continuous/repetitive patterns can be played back very easily with the TSW1400.  You can generate these patterns within a text editor, excel or matlab or any other software than can create column data, 1 column per DAC channel.  Each column of data will be signed integer from -32768 to +32767 representing the range of the DAC output.

2 - I'm not sure what a continuous trail of exponential pulses is - however if it can fit in a buffer you can play it back

3 - None of the TSW14xxx platforms can store 5 mins of data - unless you are looking at sampling really slowly.  The TSW1400 has up to 512Msamples - in most cases depending on how the memory is used for a particular format you may have access to 128M or 256Msamples.  Ease of use/flexibility was chosen over optimizing the memory for 1 particular device.

I think you will be hard pressed to find any playback system that has 5mins of memory.

You can use the automation DLL to control HSDC Pro to load patterns and start the pattern generation to the DAC, you can then load HSDC Pro with a short 0 pattern, and then Send this to the TSW1400 to effectively "stop" playback.  You can find a description of the API under the HSDC Pro installation directory.

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\High Speed Data Converter Pro\HSDCPro Automation DLL\Manual and Examples

We can provide the FPGA source for TSW1400 - however this will be provided as is without any implied support.  You will need to work with Altera for firmware modifications.  We do not have the appropriate resources to help with firmware development.  If this is ok then we can pass you the quartus project as a reference only.

    Ken.

  • Hi Ken,
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I will go through and try out the suggested methods.

At the same time, please provide the FPGA database [complete project if possible] used to capture and playback the HSDC tool updated patterns. We will be able to update the firmware by our own if needed.

  • Hariprasad,

The firmware can be downloaded from the following link:

  • Hi Jim,

Above link contains the firmware for ADC data capture. I need the the firmware for pattern generation for DAC, i.e. Reading the DDR memory and sending the patterns to DAC via LVDS_TX_PORT1 bus.

  • Hi,
For, DAC5681EVM, what Should be the frequency of VCXO [EXT_VCXO_P] (external sine wave source with a 1-Vrms, 0-V offset) from external source on J6?
    Regards,
    Hariprasad Bhat
  • Hi Hariprasasd,

When the VCXO is not installed the CDCM7005 will operate as a buffer. The input frequency should be your DAC sample rate. And make sure the jumpers are in the right position.

    1. JP13 and JP14 need to be set in position 2-3.
    2. If a VCXO is installed, it is recommended to disable it by removing jumper JP19.

    Neeraj

  • Hi,

Can I get the board files for DAC5681EVM as well as TSW1400EVM?

I want the mounting hole dimensions and their locations for my system development.

    With Regards,

    Hariprasad Bhat

  • Hariprasad,

Go to the evm product folder on the TI website and download the board design packages for each, which will contain the mechanical information you are look for.

    Regards,

    Jim
