Using the ADS5483EVM without a PC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS5483, CDCE72010

Hello,

We have a project where we would like to take in high-speed data, i.e., running the ADS5483EVM at 120 MSPS, to a Xilinx ML605 FPGA development board. It seems that most of the information in the User's Guide applies to setting up the EVM using,i.e., the TSW1200. Is it possible to set up the ADC *without any* PC interaction ? Can the EVM be completely configured using the various jumpers on the board ?

Thank you,

Jim

  • Hi,

The ADS5483 does not have any registers addressable by SPI to configure the device itself, so everything for the ADS5483 EVM is configurable by jumper or solder option with no PC interaction needed.  The TSW1200 Capture Card does have a register space that must be configured so the TSW1200 must have PC interaction, but the ADS5483 EVM does not need PC interaction.  The ADS5483 EVM can be used without the TSW1200; for example a logic analyzer could be used to capture the output sample data.  Or as you plan to do, an FPGA development platform could be used to catch data from the ADS5483EVM.

The only exception would be if you wish to use the CDCE72010 clock chip that is on the EVM and wish to reprogram it for your own application - then there would need to be a SPI connection to the clock chip for reprogramming.   But if you are not using the clock chip or if you can use the default programming of the clock chip then no SPI accesses to the EVM are needed.

    Regards,

    Richard P.

  • Richard,

Thanks for  your help and the rapid response.

We will search a bit harder in the EVM User's Guide to find the exact settings.

    Best,

    Jim
