ADS1100: Parts with Date code > 1731+5 don't work

Part Number: ADS1100

We have been using the ADS1100A0IDBVT converter on multiple products for many years. But the latest build of two products so far have failed. The A/D converter does not respond. There has been no change to any of our products no BOM or firmware changes. Changing out the new part with some old stock we still have fixes the problem. So far I have two reels of parts that don't work on three different products. The most recent reel with date code 1731+5 (Seal DT 03/02/18) works, 1747+5 (Seal DT 11/30/17) and 1751+5 (Seal DT 01/01/18) both fail.  Failure is on parts that have been reflowed and also parts from the same reel manually installed on know good boards. Boards assembled by two different CMs with parts purchased from multiple distributors at different times. Any idea why the sudden failures?

  • Henry,

Let me check and see about any recent problems and get back to you. In the meantime, were these units purchased through a distributor? If so, which one?

  • Purchased thru Avnet and Digikey
  • Henry,

For the time being, I'd like to take this question offline to get some more details. Is it ok to contact you through your email provided in the E2E system? If that's ok, I'll contact you at some point tomorrow morning.

  • Please contact me offline at your earliest convenience. Thanks
  • Henry,

I'll just close out this post. If the distributor hasn't contacted you, please feel free to email me.

    Thanks.

  • I have the same problem with Datecode 1749   ADS1100A0IDBR

The marking of the device is "AD0"  for using I2C-Address 0. If I change my firmware to Address 1 (corroeponding to the marking "AD1") the decice will work.

@: Havo you tried this workaround?

  • Dirk,

I should have probably posted this earlier, but this is the issue with these ADS1100 devices:

    *****
    ISSUE
A test issue resulted in three TI part numbers (ADS1100A0IDBVR, ADS1100A0IDBVT, ADS1100A1IDBVR) being trimmed to an incorrect I2C address between 11/16/17 – 03/28/18 . TI has since corrected the issue and will replace any affected material in the possession of a customer.

    SYMPTOMS
If the ADS1100’s I2C address is programmed incorrectly, it will not respond when the host tries to communicate with it. It will appear non-functional. TI does not expect any improperly programmed devices to correctly function in an I2C system.

    POTENTIAL WORK AROUND
Customers may change their software so the I2C address used by their host matches the incorrect value programmed into the ADS1100. If a customer elects to make that change, the customer must keep careful track of the units because the marking on the package (ADx) would be out of sync with the I2C code. When correctly programmed material arrives at the customer, the customer must have host revert back to using the correct I2C address.
    *****

You should be able to work with the distributor to get these devices replaced. If you need any assistance, I can contact you through your email. Just post back and let me know.
