ADS1204: with bridge sensors

Part Number: ADS1204
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1205, , ADS1209, ADS1220, ADS1232, AMC1204

Hi,

I would use delta sigma modulators with load cell. i found no reference design using modulators with load cells, Is there a reason?

For my application having 14 bit effective resolution will be sufficient. I thought to use one of the ads1204 ads1209 ads1205. Where can I start? Helpful would be a schematics of the analog frontend.

Thanks

  • Hi there!

Great question on the use of the ADS1204 for load cell applications. While it's not impossible to use a modulator with a load cell, it is a bit unusual. TI has a variety of ADC's specifically designed for use with load cells which is probably why you've not found any reference designs using a modulator like the ADS1204. The ADS1204 has a bit stream output which means you would have to do the back end digital filtering with perhaps an MSP430 controller with the SD-24 peripheral. Have you looked into chips like the ADS1220 or ADS1232 which do most of the heavy lifting for you?
  • Hi,

I had already looked at usual ADC like the  like the ADS1220 or ADS1232.

I want use two load cell as feedback in an application with an existing control loop where I am using C2000 MCU. Some C2000 MCU of them have an integrated SDFM module.  So from the software perspective is very attractive to read a register value instead of handle an external ADC with SPI communication. On the other side I have only seen the use of modulators for current sensing applications.

Whîch way I have to go?

  • Hi,

Yes, some of the C2000 processors can handle the bit stream, and the ADS1204 uses a wider voltage input span than the typical 'current shunt' modulators like the AMC1204 (+/- 250mV). You can certainly try it and let us know how well it works.
