Compiler/ADS54J60EVM: ADS54J60EVM

Part Number: ADS54J60EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS54J60, LMK04828

Tool/software: TI C/C++ Compiler

Hello!

My ADS54J60EVM is working fine - for some minutes. I have successfully used most of the HSDC Pro GUI functions to set up the data capture.
Even the 1s 1 nanosecond capture resulting in 4GB capture works fine. But: Leaving the system alone for 5-10 minutes the system is no longer
capturing data. Reloading using the Low Level file ADS54J60_LMF_8224 wakes the system from its deep sleep and it is fully functioning again
(until it is left alone for 5-10 minutes again...). Is something wrong with my ADS54J60EVM system?

I have also managed to use your Automation CPP code to control the system But same thing happens. Leaving the system alone it will stop
working. And the CPP code does not include any functions to reload the file ADS54J60_LMF_8224 again (not even the Write_Registers_U32 function).

I also wonder if you have an error code list for the ADS54J60.

  • Hi Jan,

One of our experts is looking into your issue, and will be back with you soon.

    Best Regards,

    Dan
  • Jan,

Make sure the 5V power supply for the TSW14J56EVM can provide at least 4A and the 5V supply for the ADS54J60EVM can provide 3A. What LMK04828 configuration files are you using for the ADC? Did you press the board reset after programing the LMK04828?

Does the system stop working when using the automation function? Can you send screen shots of the HSDC Pro GUI when this occurs? What is the status of the LED's on both boards when this occurs?

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi - Quick response!

    Quick response!

Here is the information use asked for:
    A. Power Supply
    Power supply is TTI EX354TV.

    B. Files loaded/device selected
I follow the manual and the files I load are:

                  (Using the ADS54Jxx GUI)
    1. LMK_Onboard_Config_983p04_MSPS.cfg and after this is done I do press reset
    2. ADS_LMF_8224.cfg

    (Using the HSDC Pro GUI)

    3. Select ADC device ADS54J60_LMF_8224
When I use the HSDC Pro GUI we follow the instructions to wait if needed and to input output data rate.

    C. Same thing happens when I use the automation SW. The cpp code I use (your code with some minor changes) is able to capture data!)

    D. Screen shots from HSDC Pro GUI
    Initially things are OK:

    <<Attachment jpg-file 1>>

After 10 min I try a capture of the same signal as above - result:

    <<Attachment jpg-file 2>>

And now reloading the ADS_LMF_8224.cfg restarts/resets the system.
    Regards /Jan Wennström

  • Jan,

What is the current limit set to on the power supply? If you do a capture, then come back 20 minutes later, can you do another valid capture (no automation, just single manual captures)? If it fails, what is the status of the two board LED's (I asked for this in the last post and did not get this info).

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hello again!

I´m sorry for answering so late! Things got in my way!

    Answers to your questions:

    1. The Power Supply is a TTI EX354Tv and the spec says 35 V 4A. I'm using it at 5V 4A and I hope this will do.

    2. I cannot wait 20 min anymore - things grew worse - now it takes only 1-2 minutes for the system to stop working.
(The way to restore the system is to load the file "ADS54J60_LMF_8224.cfg)

    3. The leds

         A.  AD-board: The two leds are lit at all time (after loading the first file of course) - no change.

         B.  Capture-board:

Turning power on: D17 ON, D10 (5V) ON these leds stay on at all time.

Using the HSDC GUI loading the device ADS54J60_LMF_8224:  D28 is ON, D1 is ON, D8 is ON these three leds stays ON at all time.
                                                                                                                       is also D3 is ON

(Now the system is set up according to the manual and I have also set the Data Rate to 983.04M)

Performing Capture: D3 turns OFF and D4 starts blinking. Now a capture is working fine.
But - waiting 1-2 minutes D4 stops blinking and D3 turns ON. Now a capture is no longer possible. The system must be reset as described above.
(Another capture will result in a blank display and D4 blinking as D3 is turned OFF. After a while D4 stops blinking and D3 turns ON. No Capture...)

    /Jan

  • User,

Is this power supply connected to both boards? If so, you do not have enough current. Please try using two separate power supplies. The ADC board power supply should be rated for 3A and the TSW14J56EVM for 4A.

It appears the clock going to the TSW14J56 from the ADC board is failing. Can you a request a replacement board from the distributor you purchased the ADC54J60EVM from?

While you are waiting on a replacement board, if the issue on your current board is related to the on-board VCXO, you can try operating the board in external clock mode. See section 5.1.2 of the ADC54J60EVM User's Guide for more info regarding this mode.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi,

I tested another power supply (max 10 A). Same result.

I will do two things now:

    - I will check the power fed to the system once more

    - I've had a feeling from the start that the system gets out sync. If I keep on
capturing it seems like it is shaping up for each capture. Leaving it alone
it gets out of sync. So I will try using an external sync as you suggested just
    to see what happens.

I will be away for two days and I'm back on monday. I'll get back to you!

    /Jan
  • Hi,

I have checked the power supply again it doesn't seem to be the problem.

I also hae a problem generating an external sync - I will try but it will take some time.

    Meanwhile:

I have tested running the system. As before it will stop working if I leave more than 30 seconds.

If I set it up to do continous captures it runs for 5 - 15 minutes and when it crashes it will be the HSDC
GUI that fails. Restarting the GUI and also reloading the second config file will reset the system to
    allow contonous capture again.

I get a feeling that it is the internal clock that stops working. The Capture board does notice - it keeps on
capturing. The system doesn't tell me anything. Is there something more I can do?

If I could use the C application to do a "reload" of fw before each capture I could work around the problem!
As far as I can see there is no way to do this. (Write_Register...?)

    /Jan Wennström

  • Jan,

If you are still having issues, I suggest that you request for a replacement capture board. It appears the TSW14J56EVM may be having intermittent problems.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi,
As the system does not say anything (no error or status message) I have a problem reporting anything else but the fact that the system stops sending captured data to the GUI. And this occurs 30-60 seconds after the last correct capture. What I did not mention so far is the fact that we converted the system to allow for a differential input following the steps in the manual.
As far as we can see this has worked fine - as long as you keep on capturing within 30 sec... We did not test much before going for the differential input so I cannot tell if it worked fine before!

And as I have reported before the system is back in shape ready for capture after downloading the second cfg-file to the ADS board.

Is there anything I can do? Or should I go for buying a new board? (We really love the function!)

    /Jan
  • Jan,

Can you try repeating your test by use a smaller capture size, say around 1-2G samples? I will check with the software team to see if there could be an issue with continuous large captures.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Jan,

I am afraid not. Please go ahead and request a replacement.

    Regards,

    Jim
