TSW1400EVM: Max Pattern Generator Limitation

I am trying to generate a slow phase modulated signal 48M samples in duration (single channel) using the TSW1400EVM with the DAC3482EVM by reading in the samples from a csv file. I understand from the data sheet that the TSW1400EVM supports up to 512M in pattern generator mode - maybe I'm misinterpreting the spec. When I try generating this signal, I do not observe the expected modulation at the output of the DAC3482EVM. However, when I back off the total sample count from 48M to 24M samples, the modulation is observed. I carefully inspected the 48M sample csv file and confirmed that the phase modulation is indeed embedded within those samples so I'm left with the impression that I've run into some sort of memory limitation with the TSW1400EVM.

Should I be able to playback a single-channel signal of duration 48M samples with the TSW1400EVM?

Chris,

Try generating a single tone using the hsdc pro "I/Q multi tone generator". Enter in 48M samples in the "# of samples" block, and press create tones. Then send.

See if you are able to generate this. This will confirm that the issue's you are seeing are not due to a HSDC pro limitation.

Hi Yusef,

When trying to generate a single tone with 48M points, HSPro truncates the count to 1048576. Is HSPro also truncating my custom pattern sequence to 1048576? If so, how does one make use of the 512M sample memory storage capability of the TSW1400?

I have done a little more investigation to zoom in on exactly how many points produces my failure.

I am generating a phase modulated 10 MHz carrier at 320 MSps that changes phase three times in a period of 120ms - incrementing the phase by 45 degrees every 40ms. This corresponds to a series length of 38.4M samples. At 38.4 M samples, I can clearly observe the 45 deg phase modulation in the series that I have designed. When I bump the sample count up another 32 samples (HSpro custom sequence lengths must be integer multiples of 32), the phase modulation in my signal disappears and I only observe a constant 10 MHz carrier (no phase modulation).

Is there anything magic about the number 38.4M in the HSPro software or perhaps in the DAC3482 firmware for the TSW1400EVM?

Chris,

The firmware that was developed for this part is old and was never updated when the TSW1400 had a re-design which included larger memory devices. Currently there are no plans to upgrade this firmware, so you are limited on the available memory. Sorry for this inconvenience.
