ADS1263: Strain gauge application

Part Number: ADS1263
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1235,

Can the strain gauge input be used in a push-pull application (reverses polarity

  • Hi Dale,

Welcome to the E2E forum! Strain gauges come in a lot of different configurations, so the answer is maybe.  A simple strain gauge looks like a serpentine loop and the resistance changes as it is flexed.  The resistance change will not be seen as positive or negative in this case.  A load cell is made up of strain elements forming a Wheatstone bridge.  Many of these load cells can be configured to see strain as a 'push/pull' on the output voltage.

  • Hi Dale,

If you give me specific information regarding the strain gauge you wish to use I can be of more assistance.

  • The application will be similar to the one shown on page 63 of the 2018 ADS1235 data sheet. As the bridge will see push and pull forces the voltage going into the Sig + and Sig - inputs the inputs will see a change in polarity when going from push to pull. Will this cause a problem with the ADS1235 or can it handle this?

    Thank you for your input.

  • Hi Dale,

Figure 84 of the ADS1235 datasheet shows a Wheatstone bridge configuration. This would be similar to a load cell where compression or expansion of the load cell would produce the signal output as either positive or negative polarity.  This would not be an issue for the ADS1235 or the ADS1263.
