AMC1210MB-EVM: AMC1210 clock function in Current Shunt Mode

Part Number: AMC1210MB-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AMC1210,

Hello,

I am using AMC1210 Eval board with my ADC device ADuM7701. The ADuM7701 dont have internal clock and the maximum clock frequency of ADuM7701 is 20MHz. The clock of AMC1210 is 32MHz. As per the data sheet it is saying that we can divide the clock and apply to modulator.

My question is, if I want to use AMC1210 eval board clock (16MHz) to ADuM7701, what mode need to be selected in Eval tool? I need these changes in current shunt mode.

Can I do these changes in Eval tool  in current shunt mode?

Thank You

  • Hi Bhargav,

Unfortunately, the CLK_DIV functionality is not available on the AMC1210MB-EVM, so you would have to provide an external clock.

  • Hello Tom,

    Thank You For your response.

We have Clock divider function in Resolver mode tab. If I change clock divider function in Resolver mode (Ex: Clock/2, /4, /8), will it work in current shunt mode also?

One more question, If I select clock direction as output than which modulator mode need to be used (00, 01, 10, 11) ?

    Please confirm.

    Thank You

  • Hi Bhargav,

The CPU on the PCB resets/reconfigures the AMC1210, so the CLK_DIV option won't 'stick' if you go from resolver mode to current mode.  You would want to stay in mode 00 and you could apply an external clock to both the modulator and AMC1210 via pin 6 or 7 of J3 or J4.

  • Hi Tom,

I understood what you said and I have experianced it practically. If I use divider function and which mode need to be used and is it mandatory to use it?

Even If I use clock divider function, mode "00" will work or not? or need to use Mode "11" ? please confirm. which mode will give accurate results?

    Thank You

  • Hi Bhargav,

As I said previously, you would want to stay in mode 00.  The clock divider function does not impact the digital filter when using an external clock.  By Table 6 of the AMC1210 datasheet, you would still be in modulator mode 0.  In modulator mode 3 (or mode "11") the clock is running at 2x the modulator data rate, which is not compatible with the device you are using.
