Communications Protocols DACs

I'm looking for a digital to analog converter which matches the communication protocols of PSCAD, which is a power systems simulation software. Which specific protocols should i be looking for besides bit precision, and sampling rate frequency?

  • Hello Tobias,

Could you provide some additional information as to where this DAC fits into the system, please?  A block diagram would be very helpful.  Seems there are many more components in this design, and it would be helpful to see how it all fits together.  For example, here is a Ref Design for a power system and controller: www.ti.com/seclit/df/tidrnm1/tidrnm1.pdf .  Is your system similar to this?

  • Hello Leonard,

I am currently doing research in which my first step is to simulate an analog signal. I created an arbitrary circuit through the PSCAD software, and generated a voltage time graph. From the graph, I transferred the data set over to MATLAB, and also created an arduino sketch that stored time and voltage values as two separate vectors.

I am currently searching for a DAC. The prof that I am working under told me to search for DAC's that follow communication protocols which are compatible with the PSCAD software. One protocol that needs to be compatible is the frequency at which one can input values into the DAC (sampling rate) and the bit precision suitable for the software. I will be using the arduino uno platform to communicate with the DAC.

I would just like to know what other additional communication protocols/ specifications of a dac that I should really look into before purchasing one. I haven't quite come up with a physical layout as I'm not fully sure of how I am to design it yet, but I hope this additional information helps.

    Thanks,
    Tobias
  • Hi Tobias,

I'm not aware of a DAC device that has a PSCAD interface.  If you go to the TI DAC page: www.ti.com/lsds/ti/data-converters/dacs/dacs-products.page# ,  click on the Interface link in the features section, you'll see the available selection:

Bitstream,   I2C, JESD204B, Parallel, Parallel CMOS, Parallel LVDS, SPI, Single-Wire

I am also asking the DAC experts and Grid Infrastructure teams to see what they can add.
