Yes, it is possible to supply the TPL1401 with a Zener diode. The voltage of the Zener would need to be in the 1.8V to 5.5V supply range of the TPL1401.
When designing the power supply circuit, pay close attention to the specifications of the Zener diode you choose. There will be a minimum current that needs to be met for the diode to operate in reverse breakdown, and a maximum power rating. The diode for this example has a voltage of 5.1V and a minimum current of 5mA. To be safe, allow at least 1.5mA of current to power the TPL1401. 1.5mA plus the 5mA needed for the Zener means that 6.5mA needs to be sourced from the 15V supply. For this reason, a 1.52kΩ resistor was chosen to limit the current.
For best accuracy, use the on-board precision reference instead of using VDD as a reference. Enable the internal reference by writing a 1 to the REF_EN bit of the GENERAL_CONFIG register. A gain to the internal reference can also be applied by writing to the OUT_SPAN bits of the GENERAL_CONFIG register.
