ADS131M08EVM: ADS131M08EVM setup

Part Number: ADS131M08EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS131M08, , ADS131A04

All:

I have been able to install the EVM support software on my computer.

If I want to run the ADS131M08 that is on the EVM from a different microcontroller, is there something specific I need to do, or do I just connect to SPI and go?

Regards,

Todd Anderson

  • Hi Todd,

The ADS131M08EVM hardware, GUI, and firmware are designed to work together with the provided Precision Host Interface (PHI) controller board. You may disconnect the PHI from the EVM daughterboard to connect an external microcontroller, but our GUI can no longer be used. Remember to share SPI communication signals, power, and ground between your controller board and the EVM using the available test points and headers.

  • When connected to a different microcontroller, can the PHI be used for power?

If the GUI is not used, can the "external microcontroller" control the SPI via the 8-pin header on the board?

  • Hi Todd,

You can use the PHI for power, but leaving the connector installed may cause conflicts with the digital I/Os. In addition, you would want your MCU board's I/O voltage to be shared with the ADS131M08 directly, even if it is close to the 3.3 V coming from the PHI. You would connect this I/O voltage to "EVM_DVDD."

For the analog supplies, you can do away with the PHI and provide an external 5 V to R63 and set JP12 to [2-3] position. Alternatively, you can provide the AVDD voltage directly to TP2, but I think using the U1 LDO would give better noise performance.

The J10 header is provided to allow you to connect a logic analyzer or external MCU. I would recommend not installing the PHI at the same time since it will share connections with your MCU.

    Ryan

  • Wow, this is quite a bit different than ADS131a04 evm, which has a jumper to disable the onboard microcontroller. Also, the a04 evm has a row of unpopulated pins, which allowed a technician to bring out the SPI pins to allow a logic analyzer access. This does not exist on the mo8 evm. It would have been better to have the connection with PHI be done with pins like the evm has for logic analyzer access. That way an analyzer could be connected while an external processor is connected. Very disappointing.

  • Hi Todd,

I appreciate the feedback. There is a footprint for a 40-pin BoosterPack on the bottom of the ADS131M08EVM (J11 and J12). All digital I/Os and supplies are routed to these unpopulated headers according to our BoosterPack template, which support TI MCU LaunchPads:

    https://www.ti.com/jp/ww/launchpad/dl/boosterpack-pinout.pdf

As I mentioned in another thread, we're working to consolidate our EVM platforms to only a few controller boards that are managed separately from the EVMs themselves. The PHI controller will be used on most ADC EVMs which require greater than ~8 Mbps. Providing the unpopulated headers on the bottom was how we decided to support external MCUs without adding significant complexity or bulk to the design.

  • Quick question - when supplying dvdd and avdd, how much power does the EVM board draw?

(I have limited drive potential, and before I connect I need to know. I suspect it is pretty minimal...)

  • Hi Todd,

The ADC itself consumes about 6.5 mA analog and 780 uA digital in HR Mode. This does not include the quiescent current of Y1 or U1, but I would guess if you have at least 10 mA for each supply, that will be sufficient.
