Hello all,

I am looking to put custom firmware on my TSW1400 device, developed using Quartus II. From what I've seen on the forum, there are some modifications that need to be made before you can use the JTAG ports. I've looked around, but did not find the documentation on this. Could someone point me in the direction of what I need to do to use Quartus II's Programmer over JTAG? What are the other implications of making these modifications?

Also, I do not have a programmer that will work with this EVM, can you recommend a part?

Nicholai,

You need to install R55, R57, R58, R59, R60 and R129 and remove R61, R62, R63, and R64. You will need an Altera USB blaster to program the device. You can order this through Arrow Electronics. Check the Altera website for more information regarding this programming pod. The board schematic is attached for reference.

Thank you for the reply, Jim. This is the part I am looking at: http://parts.arrow.com/item/detail/altera/pl-usb-blaster-rcn#Jpnn. Before I spend $300 on this board, I just want to confirm that this board does NOT support programming over USB?

What obvious functionality I am I losing when I reconfigure? I imagine this affects my ability to use HSDC Pro, as I'm disconnecting FTDI?

Nicholai,

You can create a .rbf file from your new .sof file using Quartus and load it with HSDC Pro GUI. This is a method we do quite often to test new firmware. This does not require the USB Blaster cable, just the USB cable used to operate HSDC Pro.

If I change the configuration to JTAG mode, (To install R55, R57, R58, R59, R60, R129 and remove R61, R62, R63, and R64.)

I just directly burn the program by using Altera quartus II interface?

In other words, can i still use all the function of the HSDC Pro GUI after I switch to the JTAG mode??

Yes. Just load the FPGA before opening HSDC Pro GUI.
