ADC161S626: DataSheet question

Part Number: ADC161S626

Hello,

In the datasheet, on page 22 section 8.2, a 10 uF tantalum capacitor is recommended for Vref, VA and VIO.  Is tantalum capacitor really necessary?  Is there any reason not to use ceramic capacitor instead?  In addition, this is the only section with tantalum capacitor recommendation.  On the following section 9.1 and 9.2, just a 10 uF capacitor is recommended for each of the power supply rails.  There is no specific mention of tantalum capacitor.  Usually tantalum capacitor is preferred for its larger ESR as in some cases of LDO and power supply output.  For this ADC, I am not sure if tantalum capacitor offers any special benefit.

Please help provide clarification on the tantalum recommendation.

Regards,

David

  • From the ADC point of view the capacitor could be ceramic or tantalum. Look at the specifications of the reference or LDO that is driving the pin. Some references will have ESR requirements. Just make sure the capacitor works with the voltage source (reference or LDO).
