DLP9000X: Inquiry of Gray scale output and DMD chipset information

Part Number: DLP9000X
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , DLPC910

We are looking for DMD setup that enables gray scale output (≥8bits) in UV/Vis wavelength. In my first glance, the DLP9000X/DLP9000XUV chip can meet our requirements. But I am confused with the description "8-Bit gray patterns up to 1,873 Hz (coupled with IlluminationModulation)". Could you please explain the mean of "coupled with illumination Modulation"? How to realize a gray scale output by using this DMD chip? Our light source will be a LED.

Further, as a user who are not familiar with electronics, I prefer to purchase a DMD chipset which contains necessary control hardwares and can be applied directly. I only found one company, ViALUX, sell the chipset of DLP9000X series. Do you have any other recommended company? Thanks!

  • Hello Zhiguang,

LED's are usually modulatable (i.e. can be turned off and on fairly quickly.  This chipset only understands binary patterns, so the user must build the grayscale image (i.e. all the bit information and pattern display times).  The modulation is required to create the short bits by turning off the illumination before the pattern is finished displaying on the mirrors.

ViALUX is a very good company and can provide turnkey systems that will likely do what you need.  Please check here for the capabilities and hardware of our various partners:

  • Hello Fizix,

    Thanks for your reply!

Your answer almost solved my question. I can understand that, in order to realize gray scale output, a grayscale image (i.e. BMP format with 8-bit steps) is necessary. And in some cases, we should turn off the light source to cut-off the projection at the right timing. But I still don't have a clear image in my mind.

I was wondering if you could show a specific example of the realization of gray scale. Or is there any files that teach us the method of gray scale output.

  • Hi Zhiguang,

I can offer more detail on the exposure time vs. mode. On the DLPC910 datasheet - DLPS064D - page 50 shows the exposure period by mode of operation for an example high speed lithography application. The exposure period will vary by mode due to how the DMD is loaded with data.

We normally quote 1-bit pattern rates as these are the fastest figures of merit. When using 8-bit patterns, bits 2 through 8 are progressively longer and therefore need more time to get loaded. This of course brings down the max pattern rate.

Hope this helps. Fizix will also see if there are grey scale examples to share.

    Matt
