DLP4500: Can DLPC350 firmware 3.1.0 be used with the DLP4500 AQFE?

Part Number: DLP4500
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350

Hi,

We have been using DLPC350 firmware v3.1.0 with the DLP4500FQE for many years and it has been working well.
(The firmware we use on the DLPC350 is based on DLPR350PROM_v3.1.0.bin with out custom patterns in it.  Firmware was build using LightCrafter GUI v3.1.0)

We have recently had to upgrade the mirror to DLP4500AFQE, on recommendation of TI.   (NOTE that we are still using the DLPC350)
Can you confirm that the same firmware will work with this part?

i.e. can you confirm that we can continue using the same firmware image for the DLPC350 as before?

Also, could you please provide a link to a changelog detailing the differences between the 3.1.0 firmware, and the latest v4.4?  Would it be worth us upgrading anyway if there are any bugfixes in that firmware?

Many thanks,

Oliver.

  • Hi Oliver,

The newer firmware v4.4 is needed for the new DLP4500AFQE. there are some differences between the two DMDs that require new firmware to support.

unfortunately I don't have a changelog to share regarding the differences between 3.1.0 and 4.4.

    Regards,

    Arthur Brown

  • Thanks for your reply Arthur,

    A few more questions:
    1. We are also using the part DLP4500AFQD.  Is the 4.4 firmware required for that as well?
    2. We still have some things using the legacy part DLP4500FQE.  Can we use the 4.4 firmware with this as well?  i.e. is the 4.4 firmware backward compatible with the DLP4500FQE ?
    3. What will happen if the 3.1.0 firmware is used with the DLP4500AFQE ?  Would the part break, or just fail to work properly?

    Many thanks,
    Oliver.

  • Oliver,

All the DLP4500Axxx devices require the newer firmware (v4.4) to work. They are not backwards compatible with the older firmware. The DLP4500AFQE features differences in physical design which require it to be operated slightly differently. If you use the wrong combination of device and firmware, you may encounter reliability issues.

The v4.4 firmware is backwards compatible with the original DLP4500FQE.

    Regards,

    Philippe

  • Thanks for clarifying.  Are you able to elaborate on "reliability issues" ?  What could this cause?

    Oliver.

  • Oliver,

The DMD may stop working in these conditions or become damaged. That is what I refer to as reliability.

    Philippe
