DLP5500: Unable to execute $L.2 WriteExternalImage

Part Number: DLP5500

Hi,

I am using the DLP LightCommander Control Software to load binary images into the display. However, I obtain the error: Unable to execute $L.2 WriteExternalImage followed by my file path. I wonder what does this error mean and how I may fix it. Thanks a lot.

  • Hello Bingyi,

Could you tell me more about the system?  Like what Operating System, Were you writing from the Light Commander GUI -- I presume this is the DLP LightCommander Control Software you are referring to.

Are you able to get any status information in the GUI?  I.e. does it confirm that it is connected?

Have you been able to control any aspect of the system from the GUI?

  • Hi Fizix,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I am using the DLP LightCommander Control Software's GUI to load the images on a Windows 10. I am able to load some images of the same dimension and format (.bmp), but not able to load the other images. I wonder if there is any incompatibility in my image files and if the error message gives any clue. Would appreciate any help!

  • Hello again Bingyi,

First, I am impressed that you were able to get this older software to run under Windows 10.

Regarding *.bmp files, there are many variations of *.bmp files.  It is a container for a number of variations.  You can look up BMP file formats.

I suspect that you are correct that this is the issue.  You may want to look at ImageMagick, which can give you information about the various images you are using.  I do not have the software set up on my computer any longer, but I believe that it will read monochrome, 8-bit grayscale and 24 bit color images.

Does this error occur when attempting to build to a firmware or when attempting to directly load to the LightCommander for display?

  • Hi Fizix,

Thanks for responding to my follow-up. Thanks for the tips on ImageMagick. I will download it and give it a try.

This error occurs when I directly load images to the LightCommander for display, using the GUI. The curious thing is that I prepared all the binary images in MATLAB, but some worked while others did not (the ones with circular patterns, specifically). The error seems to point that it fails to write to .dbi?

    Thanks!

  • Hello again Bingyi,

I cannot remember if the light commander has a compression option.  If it does and you can turn it off, try that.  Or it could be that it cannot compress the images sufficiently to get them into memory.
