DLPLCR67EVM: DLPLCR67EVM / DLPLCRC900DEVM Pre-Stored Pattern and Pattern-on-the-Fly Mode Issue Information

Part Number: DLPLCR67EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC900, DLPLCRC900EVM, DLPLCR65EVM, DLPLCRC900DEVM, DLPR900, DLPLCR50XEVM, DLPLCR90EVM, , DLP670S

Texas Instruments (TI) recently released new DLPR900 firmware (v 6.0) files for updated DLPC900 Controller EVMs [DLPLCRC900EVM and DLPLCRC900DEVM] with four updated DMD EVMs [DLPLCR65EVM, DLPLCR90EVM, DLPLCR50XEVM, and the DLPLCR67EVM] supported by the new firmware.

The release indicated that these EVMs support up to 400 1-bit (binary) patterns or up to 50 8-bit patterns in Pattern-on-the-Fly mode.

Several customers have reported pattern corruption when loading Pre-Stored Pattern or Pattern-on-the-Fly sets with more than 240 1-bit patterns or more than 30 8-bit patterns when using the DLPLCR67EVM combined with the DLPLCRC900DEVM.  The patterns starting at pattern 241 for 1-bit patterns or patterns starting at pattern 31 for 8-bit patterns exhibit missing data in the patterns.

All other DLPC900 Controller EVM and supported DMD EVM combinations are NOT affected:

  • DLPLCRC900EVM / DLPLCR65EVM - not affected
  • DLPLCRC900DEVM / DLPLCR50XEVM - not affected
  • DLPLCRC900DEVM / DLPLCR90EVM - not affected

TI testing has confirmed this issue and has traced this to the way memory is allocated in the internal controller memory buffer system.  The system attempts to store data beyond the end of allocated address spaces for this DMD due to the DMD resolution.

Pattern sets up to 240 1-bit patterns or 30 8-bit patterns are unaffected for the DLPLCR67EVM combined with the DLPLCRC900DEVM.  TI recommends that no more than 240 patterns (or more than 30 8-bit patterns) be loaded into the DLPC900 when working with the DLP670S DMD at this time.

TI is working on a firmware update for the DLPLCRC900DEVM / DLPLCR67EVM combination that will maximize the number of patterns that can be loaded in Pattern-on-the-Fly mode.

This update will be released in an updated firmware file.  TI does not have an estimate of when this updated firmware will be released, nor what the number of supported patterns will be.
