DLP5531Q1EVM: light up the headlight

Part Number: DLP5531Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP5531-Q1

i have DLP5531-Q1 evm and i want to light up the headlight by DLPC230 control program.

i have so many questions
①when i turn on the power, the red light(D8) light up,is that OK or is fault status?
②is it necessary to enter "display" mode first if i want to light up the headlight?
③i have checked the hardware connection,so i think it is software question.
  • when i try to enter display mode,an error code detected

  • Hello yin zhichao,

I will send you a step-by-step guide to resolve the errors you are encountering. Can you send me a private E2E message and include your email address so that I can grant you access to additional software and resources for the EVM?

  • hello Akeem Whitehead,my email is yinzhichao@bensch.cn.

    Thank you very much.

  • by the way can you please grant me access to the DLP Composer tool or can you send me the latest flash file?i want to try to update the flash settings to solve the problems.

    Best regards.

  • Hello yin zhichao,

I have granted you access to the DLP Composer tool and the DLP Composer project file that you will need to import into the tool. You should receive an automatically generated email with download instructions for mySecureSoftware within 24 hours.

  • Hello Akeem, thanks a lot,i have received the software and could you please send me document about how to use?

    Best regards

  • Hello Akeem,i have import "2021-02-05_EVM_Release_1.5.0.0.xproj" into the DLP composer and generated one "FlashImage_p55_1152_VSP_HL.bin"FlashImage_p55_1152_VSP_HL.bin file,i flash this file, one error code detected, can you help me?

    regards

  • Hello yin zhichao,

After power-up, does toggling the Proj_On swtich on the formatter board change the LED state to green, or allow you to enter 'Display' mode?

In DLP Composer, change the Display --> Default Source --> Batch Command Set to TPG_Checker to default the startup to a known built-in test pattern. You will then need to rebuild and reprogram the EVM with this updated .BIN flash image file. This will help to troubleshoot whether your external display configuration/connection is part of the start-up issue you are currently experiencing.

  • Hello Akeem,i have  tried as you said, but it's the same situation.

By the way, when i turn on the power,D6 and D7 is green,D8 is red,the fan can normally work, but if i try to enter display mode,it reports a command error

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks

  • hi Akeem, can you directly send me .BIN flash image file which can light up the headlight successfully or send me screen shot of dlp composer?

    Regards

  • Hello yin zhichao,

Ensure you have followed the kit assembly and start-up instructions as documented in the EVM user's guide ( https://www.ti.com/lit/dlpu099 ).

Refer to the attached .BIN file to flash program the EVM . This .BIN will cause the EVM to default to the built-in checkerboard test pattern. I have tested this file, so if this does not work on your EVM, we will need to perform further debug.

    FlashImage_p55_1152_VSP_HL.bin

  • Hello Akeem, thanks for your reply.I tried to turn SW3 off which means hold in boot through the document and flash your .bin file,it compeleted successfully

However,i still fail to enter display mode.I have checked my hardware connection carefully. Can you please check my connection below?

  • Hello yin zhichao,

Your connections appear to be correct based on the photos of your EVM setup.

I will find another way to factory reset your EVM to clear the HOST_IRQ, which illuminates the red LED at the PROJ_ON switch. Note: The Host IRQ signal is asserted to let the host know when an emergency shutdown has occurred within the DLPC230.

What power supply are you using, and what is the maximum current it can source?

  • Hello Akeem, thank you for your response. It's a auto range DC power supply. The maximum current is set to 4.1A.Should i set to a larger value?

  • Hello Akeem,

The reason why the HOST_IRQ signal be set HIGH is an operational error

    regards

  • Hello yin zhichao,

Your power supply current source is lower than what we typically recommend, but should be sufficient for boot-up. You can disconnect the LED connector from the power board to ensure the LED driver current is not creating an over current condition. Note: the DLP chipset can still start-up properly while the LED is disconnected.

Error code 556 may be a result of an improperly installed DMD onto the formatter board. Can you remove the formatter board from the light engine to check whether the DMD is properly seated/installed in the socket? If the DMD is slightly lifted or if you can see any of the pins exposed between the socket and DMD, this would cause an error to be thrown and prevent the the chipset from entering Display mode.

  • Hello Akeem,i have checked the installation of DMD and it is seated properly. By the way,the reported error code  is 565, not 556.Please check carefully.Thank you for your support again.

  • In addition,another error code(636) is reported.

  • Hello yin zhichao,

I have confirmed with my EVM setup that when the DMD is disconnected, the PROJ_ON LED illuminates red, and DLP Control Program reports error code 636 just as your system shows. The 636 error code description itself even states that the DMD low speed interface communication can fail due to a "DMD connection issue":

Considering you have not changed the configuration of the low speed port, I believe the problem is still related to the connection of the DMD to the socket. When you completely remove and reinstall the DMD, do you get a different error code, or do the start-up conditions change?

For reference, here are the EVM current values I recorded when operating at 12V while the LED cable is disconnected:

    • DMD connected, Display mode, Checker Test Pattern, PROJ_ON Green: 310mA
    • DMD disconnected, StandBy, PROJ_ON Red: 240mA
    • DMD connected or disconnected, StandBy: 180mA

If your supply current shows 240mA, this further confirms a DMD connection issue to the socket. Please confirm your supply current value.
