DLP230NP: Smartwatch setup

We are connecting a pico projector to a smartwatch mother board and need all information helpful including 3D files of parts preferably for 3DS max.  We have patented a smartwatch that uses a projector instead of a tradition led screen. The pico projector is placed flat into the smartwatch and reverse projects from inside the phone onto a medium above it that has the ability to fold out to a larger screen.  Guidance and assistance on what we all need from your company to make this happen will be highly appreciated. We are mainly putting together a 3D model of the prototype and will be doing the PCB, circuit design, and firmware as a following step. Will the battery consumption be an issue? Regards.

    I understand that this smart watch is wearable and battery operated.  Pleas correct me if I misunderstood.

    It will be very helpful if you could share the high level requirements for the product then we help you choose correct product.

    Could you please share the following:

    1. Power budget for projection

    2. Size  along with desired form factor

    3. Brightness - it will be define by how large image is required and ambient light condition

    3. Resolution 

    4. Is it color display? Is monochrome acceptable?

    Please note that there is trade-off for all above parameters, for example the size and power goes up with resolution and brightness. For such wearable battery operated product, I would priorities size and power.   Once we defined the size and power then we can choose the right product (resolution) and maximize brightness within those parameters.

    we will be using a 360mAh Li ion battery

    2. Size  along with desired form factor

    44 mm diameter circle of a smartwatch

    3. Brightness - it will be define by how large image is required and ambient light condition

    There are two image sizes projected the first being 40 mm when the screen is closed and the second image when the screen expands out to 120mm diameter. Video attached below.

    3. Resolution 

    1920x1080

    4. Is it color display? Is monochrome acceptable?

    The product concept looks exciting and the requirements for an optical engine are challenging. 

    I am not aware of an existing optical engine which can meet your requirement. You need to work a design house or an optical engine manufacture to design and develop a custom optical engine for your application. You can download the DLP  Third party tool from the following link:

    I could assist you in defining the high level requirement for the optical engine. Please refer to the application note on  "TI DLP® PicoTm System Design: Optical Module Specifications" for definition of terms used optical engine specification.

    High level Optical engine specification:

    1. Size - This is the most critical factor. You may want to define the max  X, Y and Z dimension for optical engine after accommodating space  for battery and electronics. Assuming watch volume ( 40mmx40mmx 10mm) and 33% space for projector - 30mmx15mmx10 mm is good starting point for optical engine. This may be achievable for small DMDs like DLP160CP, DLP2010 and DLP230GP. Our customers are able to design small optical engine in this formfactor for AR glass application.

    2. Throw ratio - Lets assume when you expand the projection area to 120mm,  it also raises in height to 20-25 mm. The throw ratio 

                    for 40 mm image at a distance of 10 mm = 0.25 throw ratio

                   for 120 mm image at a distance of 25 mm = 0.20 throw ratio

      This is a very challenging requirement especially in this formfactor /size.

    3. Brightness - You will able support a good visual experience with 1-3 lumens light out. For 40mm display you will  be able to achieve > 200 nits with 1 lumen light output. For 120 mm screen , 3-4 lumens light output will give ~150 nits experience if your glass has ~1.25 screen gain.

    4. Power budget - 360mAH battery (3.7 v) and say 5 hour in use operation, give  power budget for whole system ~260 mW. This requirement along with size will limit  resolution for display.

    4. Resolution - Best you can get within  size and power budget.
