HI :

I have two questions，please help to check.

1. Reference design page NO.Q3 PMOS SQD50P06-15L-GE3,ID=50A, this material is difficult to buy, why use such a large current PMOS ? According to the "dlpa084" document, the maximum power consumption is only 7.1W.Can the PMOS used here be replaced with a smaller ID current MOS?

2. Similarly, L2 also uses a high-current 15uH inductor XAL1010-153MEB. Why use such a high-current inductor? Can I use a lower current inductor?

Hi,

It is possible to use lower current rated parts depending on what LED are being driven. Power dissipation and thermal simulations should also be considered and implemented.

This reference design was also meant to support other LEDs for example the Osram Q8 LEDs with the following current ratings. The power ratings you had mentioned of 7.1W was for Osram CSL LEDs which have less current and power draw.

Overall the components may have been selected to overbuild for the design and taking into account current overshoot and system robustness.

For example another EVM, the DLP5530PROJQ1EVM which supported higher current and power, used the following pmos:

There should be similar components available. Just ensure they have high enough ratings, are AEC qualified, and support a wide temperature range.

Another question, how to calculate the junction temperature on this PMOS tube?
If Ron=0.02Ω, the ambient temperature is 85°C and the maximum brightness. What factors need to be considered? Can you give me a calculation example?

Hi,

It would be best if you have a thermal camera you can set it up to measure the temperature of components. Alternatively you could run thermal simulations.
