The DLP4500 EVM uses DLPC350 controller. You may want to refer to DLPC350 datasheets and Programmer guide to understand the functionality and operations.

Please refer to section "2.4 Display Sequences" (page 34) of DLPC350 programmer guide.
In display mode , the controller is projecting a video image and the input is expected in 1280x800 format (Manhattan grid). The controller does various image processing and maps pixel to DMD's pixel grid (Diamond).
In pattern mode , controller is expecting input in 912x1140 format (Diamond grid). It is by-passing all image processing and input data should match DMD pixel grid.
Hopefully this explain why you are seeing a difference in projected image.
