DLPDLCR230NPEVM: Create custom board with HDMI input for DLPDLCR230NPEVM

Hello everyone.

As I explained in this post (https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp-products-group/dlp/f/dlp-products-forum/1166062/dlpdlcr2000evm-dlp2000-dlpc2607-dlpa1000), I want to create a custom board that could help me to use the EVM as a second screen. 

In order to do so, I'd like to know if this possible with this EVM (DLPDLCR230NPEVM) instead of the previous one (DLPDLCR2000EVM). 

I'd like to mention that I read this topic (https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp-products-group/dlp/f/dlp-products-forum/1125588/dlpdlcr230npevm-connecting-directly-to-a-pc-mac) that gave me additional information.

First, I'd like to say that my evaluation module DLPDLCR230NPEVM is working perfectly fine with my Raspberry Pi 3B.

Secondly, I would like to keep the same components I chose previously for my project. That's where I need your advices.

If I'm not mistaken, DLPC3436 sends video with the format RGB888 as well as the previous Display Controller (DLP2607), so IT6801 would still work as a HDMI to RGB888 convertor.

I'd like to use a MSP430 from your suggestion, so I chose this microcontroller : MSP-EXP430F5529LP (https://www.digikey.fr/fr/products/detail/texas-instruments/MSP-EXP430F5529LP/4311683). Does it seem to be a good option ?

I didn't chose any EDID yet so I'll use a standard one.

Do you think this project could work as fine with DLPDLCR230NPEVM as it should have worked with DLPDLCR2000EVM ? Do I need to add more component to make it work ?

    We did not have this use case in mind for this EVM so it will be a lot of work. We haven't  tested the EVM in this manner even though the chipset has the capability to use the HDMI setup.

    We intended for the Raspberry Pi to send commands and video data to the controller on the EVM. Do you intend to remove the Raspberry Pi all together and just have the ITE6801 board to interface directly with the EVM? That is something TI hasn't done.

    The team can look into a MSP suggestion.

    I want to reiterate that this is not something TI has looked into. There would be limited support as most knowledge comes from the current existing systems. With this application TI can't ensure that this will work as expected.

    Yes, that's exactly what I would want to do.

    I understand that since this hasn't been done, you don't have much information on the matter. I'm aware that you won't have all the answers to my questions but that's fine !

    I'm waiting for your opinion on the MSP suggestion.

    Given that your use case is outside of our scope of support and that we are not sure what role the MSP would be performing, it is difficult to give you an answer. However, other DLP reference designs such as the TIDA-01571 (using the DLPC3433) provide examples for interfacing the micro-controller with a DLP platform.

    So long as the power supply meets the requirements laid out in Section 6 of the 230NP EVM User's Guide, the supply should work well with the EVM. The following has been copied from the guide:

    External Power Supply Requirements: • Nominal Output Voltage: 5 VDC • Minimum Output Current: 3 A; Maximum Output Current: 4 A • Efficiency Level: VI

    Please exercise extreme caution when using a homemade cable of any kind.
