DLPC7540EVM: JTAG Flash Programmer - seems like the Flash Bootloader binary file is missing

Part Number: DLPC7540EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC7540, , DLP650TEEVM

Hi,

I can almost get the JTAG Flash Programmer working, but the Flash Bootloader file seems to be missing.

See the attached document for details.File Missing.pdf

  • Well, that didn't work and has bricked my EVM.  Attached are the steps I followed.  Did I do it wrong?DLPC7540EVM - Bricked.docx

  • Hello Paul,

We're looking into your issue. Thank you for your patience.

    Best,

    Maxine

  • Paul,

Just looking at the bootloader.bin, it looks like it is size 49,712 = 0xC230; you had 0x8000 as the Size in the GUI.  I would recommend changing that to 0xFFFF.  Erase the whole flash, or at least from the start through the block containing 0xC230; then pram and set the size to 0xFFFF.  Note: If I recall correctly, the GUI will change the larger size to the actual file size when you program the flash.

I don't know if this is your problem but that is what i first notice when I look at the information.  Maybe that will help?

    Regards,
    Gary

  • Hi Gary,   I tried what you suggested, but it did not work.  Do you have any other ideas?  Are you sure that the file that was provided earlier in this thread actually works?

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Paul,

I am not able to test this on a DLPC7540 system.  I have used a version of this tool a bit for a different platform; I was just providing a comment based on what I saw in the picture you sent in case that was the issue.

Maxine and/or made4engineering should be looking into this, I think.

    Regards,
    Gary

  • I tried the new bootloader.bin file and it doesn't work either.  Did you test it with a DLPC7540EVM?  The problem I am seeing is that the USB port is greyed out and I can't connect with the GUI to download theBootloader Issue.pdf firmware.

  • Try setting the size to 0x80000. Also if you can connect to the UART and get debug messages out it could be useful

  • It seems like it is almost working.  See attached for more details....2843.Bootloader Issue.pdf

  • Paul,

Thanks for the file.  Let us look at this and get back to you today or tomorrow.

    Fizix

  • Make sure you are connected as so:

And you need to program your .img firmware as so:

  • Made4engineering does not understand the problem.  I cannot do what is suggested above because the USB Connect button is greyed out as shown in the attached file called Mad4engineering.pdf.

This is what I think the problem is:

The bootloader.bin file that was provided only partially works because it has the bootloader functionality but no application code as you can see in the debug message in the file called bootloader issue.pdf.   I think that if the bootloader.bin file was modified to have the bootloader functionality and an Application. The USB port would work.

  • The bootloader is all that is needed for USB connection. You are getting all of the correct feedback though UART and Device manager. Make sure the USB is connected to 7540EVM J2, and not to the JTAG. Also make sure there are no other programs running which could be already connected to the 7540 USB. Perhaps also avoid using USB hubs, and connect directly to PC.

  • Ok, now I can connect over USB, but when I do a firmware download it fails.  Are you using a different program to download firmware?Firmware Download Failure.pdf

  • Remove J9 from the EVM, power cycle it.  Use advanced mode in the GUI, and "Flash Program" like in the image earlier.

  • Ok, that worked.  I can communicate and the splash screen comes up.  I am having a new problem where the system does not automatically display the HDMI input.  Is there a default setup for the board that I can send to it?

  • Just to confirm, you are now able to display video through your setup, just not by default?

  • Actually today I am not even getting the splash screen.  See attached for the current status.Current Status.pdf

  • You will need to make sure the device is not coming up in bootloader mode

  • I have downloader the application code, and I have the jumper J9 removed.  As shown in the last document, the GUI shows the status as EVM Status: Ready: Disp External

Doesn't that mean that the application code is running?

  • Are you able to display any test patterns?

  • No, I cannot get anything to display.

  • What feedback are you getting through UART now? You may want to check to make sure the ribbon cables are seated properly

  • It seems to be switching inputs constantly.  I see the LOCK led for 30 seconds, then it goes off 30 seconds.  The debug log says ""Connector timeout is detected!, switching to next connector....

I have swapped all the flex cables and tried a bunch of things but so far no luck getting the system back to normal.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • Perhaps it could be the HDMI cable, or a problem with the PC display settings

  • Paul,

Are you still needing assistance with this issue?

    Fizix

  • I could not get the original DLPC7540EVM and DLP650TEEVM boards working again.   I figured that I jacked up the firmware somehow.  I was able to get the firmware downloaded, but I keep getting "Source instability flagged by Front-end!, restarting Autlock..."

So I bought a second set, and I am having the same problem straight out of the box ""Source instability flagged by Front-end!, restarting Autlock....

Any help would be appreciated.  The second set of hardware is straight out of the box.  I capture the debug info in the attached file.
