DLP4710EVM-LC: REPAIR URGENT/FREE REPLACEMENT

Part Number: DLP4710EVM-LC

Hi Experts,

Our customer has a concern regarding their purchase order, while they were operating the device, they turned off and unplugged the USB connector from the board; nevertheless, the USB connector and its lanes and pads were ripped off from the board.

They need to know if they can replace this element or the whole board.

Our customer said that this must be related to a warranty, because there was no over force applied to the USB connector, looks like a design problem since the device can only be controlled by the usb port (firmware and scripting).
Is this feasible? They are in the middle of a prototype validation and with this weak point looks difficult to sustain it, as our primary projector.
Please help advise. Thank you.
Kind regards,
Gerald
  • Hello Gerald,

I'm checking with the team to see if we can accommodate the customer's request since the EVM was not broken by shipping.

I will get back to you when I confirm with the team.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hi Gerald,

Is your client able to re-solder the piece? This would seem to be fairly easily fixed.

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Hi Austin,

I did not ask him because when I check the image that he sent as shown above, it seems that the copper/solder pad in the PCB was already ripped off. If this is still possible to repair, please advise. Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hello Gerald,

Can you please ask the customer to try to re-solder the piece and check the connections based on the reference design first?

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hi Lori,

Thanks too much for your reply, Our customer sent the device to an external local PCB workshop, and they successfully rebuild the pads and tiny lanes. Nevertheless, once he tried to connect to his laptop and verify the connection with the EVM GUI application, it didn’t recognize it, in fact, he get this error from Windows OS (see attached image).

What is the next step? Please help advise. Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hello Gerald,

This error window can be caused if any of the situations exist listed in the article that I found from this link: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/backup-and-storage/usb-device-not-recognized-error

I would suggest that they can double check the USB connections first. Then, they may want to uninstall the GUI software and re-install the GUI with Cypress USB drivers.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hi Lori,

Our customer checked with the external provider and there was a problem in the USB cable, where a lane was bend. As a matter of fact they checked pin by pin the connections and supply voltages (USB) and everything looks consistent with the reference design.

Nevertheless, the computer no longer detects the USB peripheral, he re-install GUI example and Cypress driver, but nothing makes it discoverable, neither the device manager sees the USB peripheral.

    Please advise. Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hi Gerald,

Have they tried to use another USB cable?

It seems to me the issue is either the hardware of the USB cable/port or the USB drivers, I don't think it is regard to the EVM or GUI software.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hi Lori,

Yes, the customer tried with several cables but nothing happened, the device is still not recognizable.

    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hi Lori,

    Additionally, customer is asking:
"Coming back to the part replacing according to BOM, we will ask for a quotation for the components and installation.
There is anything special with the USB to Cypress components, does anything need to be “firmware burned” or is just put them in their location and turn on?"

    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hello Gerald,

It appears that the ground pin solder was ripped from the board. Can you wire the ground pin of the USB to one of the grounded mechanical solder points of the receptacle itself?

    Regards,

    John

  • Hi John,

    Our customer said below:

We will do that, I’ll let you know by pictures and the result out of it.

By the way we already bought a new unit of the DLP4710EVM-LC, nevertheless, this damaged unit must be also functional. I point this out, because we will use the same cable for both of them and make a cross-check (to discard usb cable/driver issues).

    Regards,
    Gerald

  • Hi Gerald,

    Thank you for the information!

It would be good to check on a working EVM to narrow down the issue.

    Regards,

    Lori
