DLPLCR4500EVM: The DLP4500 cannot connect to computer

Good day

My customer purchased a DLPLCR4500EVM and found an issue below.

When the DLP is powered on, the LED shows a red light and the fan is no longer running, but there are still stripes projected. After turning on the power, the DLP chip immediately heats up and the temperature is very high. I guess there may be a short circuit in the circuit.

The current situation is as follows:
The JTAG flash programmer tool displays the error message: No Device found.
DLP LightCraft 4500 GUI Unable to Connect to DLP.
After turning on the power, the fan does not run,the DLP chip will heat up.
I think there may be some issues with the circuit.

    Understand thanks for the clarification. 

    Please check the following with the customer. 

    What power supply are you using with the EVM, is it following the spec of the user guide:

    • Power supply: – Nominal voltage: 12-V DC – Typical current: 6 A – Maximum current: 7 A – DC connector size: • Inner diameter: 2.5 mm • Outer diameter: 5.5 mm • Shaft: 9.5-mm female, center positive – Efficiency level: V – A recommended power supply is Digi-Key part number 62-1186-ND , or equivalent.

    Can you tell me what LED turns red?

    You should see the following behavior from the user guide:

    An LED on the bottom of the DLP LightCrafter 4500 board, next to the flex cable lights up green. (This should be D7 LED I believe) The fan starts, stops, and then restarts while the DLPC350 is booting. After 5 to 10 seconds, the DLPC350 bootloads and displays a screen with the DLP logo and DLP LightCrafter 4500 logo. The D4 LED on top of the DLP LightCrafter 4500 board flashes on and off green. If the board shuts down after briefly turning on the display, the power supply current rating might be too low.

    The Customer replied.

    The power supply used by DLP is purchased according to TI DLP® LightCrafterTm 4500 Evaluation Module User's Guide, with a standard voltage of 12-V DC and a current of 6A.


    When the DLP is powered on, the fan does not rotate. This LED may be the D4 LED on the top of the DLP LightCraft 4500 board, which is located next to J18 and is red and constantly on. At the same time, the DLP chip on the top of the DLP LightCraft 4500 board heats up and the temperature is very high.

    I hope you can solve this problem as soon as possible. This problem has been bothering me for too long.

    There is another question, I would like to know how to fix the DLP board on the optical platform or other brackets. When projecting stripes on the DLP, I need to ensure that the DLP is fixed and cannot be moved.

    Thank you for the information. 

    The top red LED is indicationg there is a fault status by the DLPC350 normally there should be a green LED blinking indicating everything is okay. 

    Can the customer look into a few issues:

    1. Can they check the bottom LED D7 what color is it on the bottom of the board? Should be green if power is good, it will be red if there is an issue with the power supply. 

    2. What is the customer firmware on their system currently. This can be checked in control program.

    For the last customer question I do not understand the question, is the customer asking how to secure the DLPLCR4500EVM? The EVM is designed to sit on a flat surface and does not have any mounting hardware or attachment points, the customer may have to device their own method to clamp or hold the EVM in place.

    The Customer replied.

    When the power is turned on, LED D7 at the bottom lights up red. After about 2 seconds, the LED lights up green.
    My firmware is the latest firmware version 4.4.
    So how to solve the problem of the top LED turning red?
    I hope you can help me solve this problem instead of constantly asking various questions.

    Please provide the following response to the customer:

    Thank you for the information. We are going to need more information and perform more debug steps to narrow down the issue. 

    The LED D7 behavior is normal which indicates 12 V power is fine. Can you probe the highlighted signals around the fan circuitry to see if any of these signals are high? Fan pwm is coming from the DLPC350. 

    Does your EVM show up as a device connected to your computer? Can you try running the attached test.exe through the command line. This executable will attempt to connect with the DLPC350 and will read back the status registers and print them out.

    Sorry, I am unable to probe the highlighted signals around the fan circuit.
    I don't have any measuring tools here. During the measurement process, it should be necessary to disassemble the DLP board.
    I am concerned that my improper operation may cause new damage to the DLP board.
    Finally, the DLP is unable to connect to the computer and the test.exe cannot run.

    Can I replace it with a new DLP to use?
    This DLP is completely unusable.

    Thanks for the further information. 

    Please relay the following to the customer:

    When did you purchase this EVM and was it ever in a state that it could power up normally without any issues or the very first time you powered it up, this issue occured?

    The fan measurements would all be on top of the board without dissassembly and an oscilloscope or multimeter can be used however if you do not have any measurement tools then this debug step would not be possible. 

    You are free to replace the DLPC350 controller chip if you choose but that will need to be done on your own. TI does not provide repair services. If the EVM is still in the warranty window then an RMA can be initiated.

    The following is my result of measuring the voltage of the fan circuit.
    The voltage values measured below are all relative to the ground.
    After connecting the power supply, the base voltage of transistor Q1 is 11.85V, and the base voltage of transistor Q2 is 0.11V.
    The voltage at pin 1 of J22 was initially measured at 8.39v, but the voltage at this pin continued to decrease and eventually dropped to 0.
    The voltage at pin 2 of J22 is 3.09V. During this period, the temperature of the DLPC350 chip was very high and a burnt smell came out.

    The DLP I purchased is still within the warranty period window. But now due to product issues, I am unable to use it properly. I need to initiate RMA, what do I need to do?

    For RMA, you will need to go through the process from wherever the EVM was acquired. This thread can be used as proof of RMA authorization.
