DLPA2000: Possible to use DLP chipset without any LEDs attached to PMIC?

Part Number: DLPA2000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC3420, DLP160AP, DLP4710LC, DLP3010LC, DLP2010LC

Tool/software:

Hi, I am interested in using your DMDs for light modulation, not in a projector.  As such I have no possible use for the LED driver functionality of the DLPA2000 PMIC.  Would it be possible to operate the DMD alone (DLP160AP) with the DLPC3420 and DLPA2000 without any light source connected?  My goal is simply to use the DMD to display fixed optical masking patterns.  If this is not possible, what other solutions would you have that could be used instead?

Thanks.

  • Hi Yai,

If you would like to use this without any illumination, you could replace it with a resistive load or diode and turn the LED currents down low.

  • As I understand it, the controller under typical operation will strobe the LEDs such that the DMD will be changing its mirror positions multiple times per frame to reproduce the incoming colour information.  As I want the DMD mirrors to stay completely on or off for each "frame", would I have to accomplish this by sending full white pixels to the DMD controller? (i.e. 100% duty cycles for all RGB LEDs)

  • Hello Yai,

In order to to this you should send a full white image, you could also use the test patter generator white solid field or white image curtain. Please note that The mirrors will still switch in the off position for a small segment to of each frame to preserve the lifetime of the mirrors.

Your application sounds like a light control application which might benefit more from one of our light control chipsets. Check out our DLP2010LC/DLP3010LC/DLP4710LC chipsets as well!
