DLPLCR4500EVM: Request for Blue LED Board design Files

Hello,

I have disassembled the light engine to access and replace the blue LED with an UV LED as directed in the TIDA-00293 reference design. However, I discovered to my dismay that the LightCrafter had undergone a revision and the circuit board design (Philips Violet LED board.pcb) provided as part of the modification files appears to be incompatible.

Where can I obtain the design files for the current version of the blue LED board so that I can modify it to support the smaller UV LED package?

The blue LED board is marked:

610-0017-01

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your question. As TI doesn't produce the optics module, I'll have to see if we can get an updated PCB file from the optical module company so that we can update the design. Please allow some time to do this - I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Perhaps if you could attach some pictures of what differences you are seeing, that would be helpful.

The image on the top is from the TIDA-00293 Modification instructions. The shape of the board has changed, two locating pins were added on either side of the board and it seems the aluminum bracket has been omitted. The board is now fastened directly to the light engine using two screws in opposite corners.

Can you describe in what way the Phillips LED board that is included in the design files is incompatible? For this design, we expect that users will make their own board following those provide design files for the new LED and it doesn't appear that the optics housing has changed so our replacement LED board should still work.

For your reference, the connector on the blue LED board is model ZYA1501-FVS06 and the pin-out is:
Pins 1,2,3 = BLED+
Pins 4,5,6 = BLED-

The PCB that's included in the design files just does not seem to fit. It seems to me that the optics housing has changed. In the EVM from the instructions there are two threaded holes in the top right and bottom left corners that are on a raised feature. On the EVM that I have received, the two corresponding threaded holes are in the top left and bottom right corners and the flange is now completely flat. When the board is properly centered, it covers half of the top left hole. Below are a few pictures to illustrate what I mean. The first two are from the manual.

Thanks for sharing the images - I understand better what you're reporting. I'll need to see what we can do about this, it is clear now that the TI Design is out of date for this particular optics engine.

Unfortunately, there isn't anything we'll be able to do quickly, so my advice to you would be to see if you can redesign the new PCB holding the LED such that is makes use of the new screw holes. As you're probably aware, alignment of the LED in the optics is crucial, so do your best to copy the positioning of the original LED so that there are no additional losses.

Hi Dmitry,

The LED used in this reference design is LHUV-0420-0650 from Phillips. Use any parts vendor you would like.

I suppose you could replace both of the other LEDs although I don't know how the disassembly of the optics engine to get to those other boards would work. The main concern would be heat on the DMD. You'll want to carefully manage the current to the LEDs and carefully manage the cooling on the optics engine to make sure you don't overheat the DMD.

I don't think the LED is 16A, it's probably 1.6A if anything. The LED driver circuitry can be found in the schematic for the Lightcrafter 4500, which is here: www.ti.com/.../dlp4500-c350ref

That should help you understand the circuit design parameters a little better.
