DLP4500: Need help getting 120Hz refresh rate with DLP4500 EVM

Hello,

I'm currently working with the DLP4500 evaluation kit and I need to get a 120Hz refresh rate. Currently, I can only get 60Hz using my system. I'm using a windows 10 platform with an Nvidia GTX 780 graphics card. I've tried setting a custom resolution and framerate using software provided by Nvida, but when I set a resolution a supported resolution (say 1280x800) the framerate drops severely to ~15Hz. I've done this using both video mode and pattern sequence mode. When in pattern sequence mode, I use the 1140x912 resolution. Are there any special settings I need to make using the TI GUI for the kit?

Hi Larry,

For video mode, you'll need to modify the video timing parameters to get 120Hz to work. You can find information on this here:

For pattern sequence mode, to get to 120Hz, you'll need to have less than 48 total bit planes of patterns, otherwise you take a loading hit when the buffers have to grab the next frame from memory. What is your pattern sequence configuration?

Ok, and for Windows do you have mo detail (than screenshot) procedure to do that? And what software should we use?

The detail in that screenshot is simply how to set your blanking and front/back porch settings with your video. In general, if your video card allows this level of control, you should be able to adjust settings there. I'll ask around and see if we use anything internally for adjusting video but for a lot of our testing we are using dedicated external video sources, not computer graphics cards so it's hard to provide a concrete recommendation.

Hi Nik,

A couple suggestions for tools that may help you out:

There is an excel sheet for calculating VESA timings: www.gradllc.com/.../VESA Timing.xls

Astro Control SW for video timing calculation and EDID editor: www.astrodesign.co.jp/.../VG-870B_871B_873_874.html

It seems that usually these controls lie inside graphics cards menus if these functions are allowed. As I mentioned, we mostly use external video generators which have these types of controls so I'm not much use when come to recommending other software.

Which GUI is this referring to? I cannot find any of these option for the lightcrafter 4500 GUI.

Hi Larry,

These settings are not from the Lightcrafter GUI, they are from a video timing editor. Whatever video source you're using should allow these controls and you can tweak them in the interface provided for it.
