What is the highest flux density damage threshold available for DMD chips, and which product has the highest damage threshold?

I am considering the possibility of using DMD's for a rather high-power application. It is in this context, that my question on damage threshold arises.

The light source could be either a broadband light source or a laser light source.

I need to do a spatial light modulation of about 3 kW of CW-power. Can this be done with only 1 DMD or should it be divided up onto several? In the latter case - how many DMD's would be needed?

Grateful for any advice you may be able to provide.

Hi David,

Did you ever find an answer to this query? I too was thinking of a DMD application using high optical power and wondered the same thing. I looked in the data sheet for the DLP5500 device and followed the calculation in the 'Micromirror Array Temperature Calculation' and came up with a value of about 8000 lumens for maximum Tarray of 70 degrees C. Using maximum possible luminous efficacy, this is about 12W, which is not even in the correct city, let alone ballpark - unless I have missed something in the calculation?

Also, I could not find the reason that Tceramic is set at 55 degrees for the calculation, if this was lower (active cooling?) then more power could be handled. Sort of academic though since even if Teramic was 0 degrees, max power according to my calculations is still only 60W.

I would be interested in your thoughts.

Hello David,

First, welcome to the forums and Second, I am very sorry that I overlooked this request.

The 0.95 1080p Type A DMD spec shows 20 W/cm² of CW power in the visible spectrum (approx 400 - 800 nm) which comes out to about 48 Watts for the device. That would require about 60 devices for 3 kW of power.

Thanks for your reply. Iwas not aware of the 0.95 device you menioned in your reply to David - I cannot find it on the website. Is this a new device? Where can I find info on it?

Hi Fizix, That's great, I hadn't noticed that the kit came with the 0.7 and 0.9 chips. But why cannot I not find these devices on the MEMS product page? Is the eval kit the only way to get them? Even via the eval kit page I cannot see a data sheet for this device. Thanks for your help. Cheers, John.
