Is color mode and fps/hz (firmware) set on the chip on the ribbon cable, or the DLPController chip on the PCB?

Reason I am asking is I want to know if I can use the Lightcrafter 2010 to update firmwares of optical engines which also uses the DLP2010 DMD but the board is not designed for monochrome operation mode by default

Armen,

This sort of information (framerate, color sequence information, etc.) Is stored on the DLPC3430 device's flash on the PCB. this flash device is read by the DLPC3430 on boot, along with object code for the system.

Armen,

Most of the optical engines using our DMDs also have flash devices installed, which have the same ASIC firmware installed on them. The firmware on these SoCs is calibrated to each optical engine individually (with different duty cycles, etc. as necessary).

Ultimately, that leaves the user with two different approaches with where to put the ASIC flash. Our EVMs on TI.com have ASIC firmware stored on the main board (as described above), but firmware is also available on the optical engine which is convenient for custom designs.

How can you install a new firmware on the flash on the ribbon cables? Can you use the EVMs for that?

Armen,

You technically may be able to do this, with multiple caveats. First, the EVM does not support reflashing the firmware on the optical engine in this manner as it will typically address its own onboard flash for that purpose. Second, the firmware available on each optical engine's flash device is specially calibrated for each device individually. As such, it is not recommended to tamper with the firmware on the optical engine's flash device.

Well, if I want to make an optical engine run in monochrome mode I don't have much choice than flashing the ribbon cable now do I?

By the way, got an update from the optical engine supplier, they can provide their own EVM for flashing the ribbon cable's flash but I'll still need a custom firmware. Did you manage to generate one? If you haven't checked my PMs please do.

Armen,

In order to be able to create custom firmware images in the same vein as what I have provided, you have to sign TI's NDA and SLA to acquire DLP Composer tool.

And where / how does one do that? Seriously, this info should be provided on the website rather than only told it exists when asked. Even Microsoft doesn't work like this anymore. Regardless...
