DLPC300: Can the DLP fan be turned off?

Part Number: DLPC300
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP2010, , DLPDLCR2000EVM

I would like to use DLP pico projectors (Lightcrafter would be OK) in which vibrations are not acceptable. Thus, however quiet, fans are not an option. Is there are water-cooling or peltier-cooling option? Alternatively, is there are not-too-destructive method for turning the fan off temporarily? I appreciate that this would be at my own risk, and that is certainly OK with us.

Thanks in advance for your help/guidance,

Alf

  • Hi Alfredo

Welcome to E2E and thank you for your interest in DLP technology.

Can you elaborate on your specific intended application? The DLPC300 chipset is designed for Advanced Light Control applications while the LightCrafter range of projectors are designed for display applications. There are Pico projectors (DLP2010, for instance) which do not require a fan for cooling. You may choose an appropriate chipset based on your requirements.

  • Hi Azad,

Thank you for your response. I led a small research group at Stanford University in which we build a few (10-20) research grade instruments to image the retina. As part of these instruments, we use a DLP projector (currently the DLPDLCR3010EVM) as a fixation target (yes, we shine that directly in the eye, but with multiple filters and dichroic mirrors, so only a tiny fraction of the light reaches the retina). In any case, the new generation of instruments that we want to build is interferometric, so the vibration of a fan is a non-starter, and given our low volume and personnel limitations, we are looking for an off-the-shelf DLP projector with LEDs on it already (as opposed to a bare chip with controllers) without a fan or one that can have the fan turned off via software for a few minutes at a time.
    Does that make sense?
    Thanks,
    Alf
  • Hi Alfredo,

    Thank you for your response.

In essence, I believe your requirement is a plug-and-play display projector without a fan. In that case, I'd suggest two options: DLPDLCR2000EVM or DLPDLCR2010EVM. Both Evaluation Modules support plug-and-play and can be used out-of-the-box.

The DLPDLCR2000EVM supports a resolution of upto 640x360 (nHD) and a brightness of 20 lumens out-of-the-box.
The DLPDLCR2010EVM supports a resolution of upto 854x480 (WVGA) and a brightness of 25 lumens out-of-the-box.

The main difference between the two is that the 2010EVM has USB and HDMI ports to support external video input and connection to a PC while the 2000EVM requires an external host processor like the BeagleBone Black or the Raspberry Pi.

Depending on your requirements, you may choose either one of them.
