It's a little hard for me to distinguish the different types of DMDs, So I had a couple of questions:

1- What does the color of the DMDs tell us? I know the gold ones are Industrial but what about the other ones?

2- Why are there different sizes but same resolutions? I mean what benefits d larger DMDs have over smaller ones?

3- I want to use a 1080p DMD for 3d printing, the most appropriate one is DLP-6500 as I know, can we also use a 4710 chip? Where can I find a list of optical manufacturers for 6500 and 4710 chips?

1. The gold "Type A" packaged DMDs are for high-performance applications that require high optical power levels or continuous exposure to wavelengths below 420 nm. The ceramic packages used for DMDs are typically optimized for a smaller size or lower cost applications.

2. Regarding different sizes but same resolutions, once again the larger size DMDs with the same resolution will typically offer higher optical power handling and higher contrast ratio vs the smaller optical arrays

3. For 3D printing applications with a 1080p array size there are many DMD options :

DLP4710AFQL is the smallest DMD and would offer the lowest price point but has a lower optical power handling capacity and is not rated to work long term with wavelengths below 420 nm

DLP6500BFYE is in the middle has a higher optical power handling capacity but is also not rated to work long term with wavelengths below 420 nm

DLP6500BFLQ has a higher optical power capability vs. the DLP6500BFYE and is rated for continuous operation with wavelengths down to 400 nm

DLP9500BFLN is the largest DMD, offers the highest optical power handling and the highest optical power support for wavelengths between 400-420 nm

Thank you sir, that was exactly what I needed. Just another thing that came into my mind is that some DMDs are in a diamond formations, is DLP4710 also in that formation?

Hi Pourya,

DLP4710 is not diamond arrangement, its manhatten arrangement (45degree tilt from diamond arrangement)

Regarding the life of the DMD you mentioned, what are the symptoms of the aging dmd, I mean how should we understand that the dmd needs replacements? And also is there any way to calculate the life of the DMD?

Hello Pourya,

If you operate a DMD designed for the visible wavelength range and operate within the specifications of the data sheet it should continue to operate reliably. There are temperature derating curves shown each data sheet.

Operating outside of the specifications is not recommended.
